Can anyone recommend a Home Insurance company?

Just busy getting quotes and wondered if any of you would recommend anyone, or alternativly steer clear of any.

Just be careful that you know what you're buying. Cheap insurance doesn't mean that you are getting the same cover at a cheaper price. I got a quote from Churchill a while ago - the guy asked if I had any pets. I told him I have 2 cats. Their Buildings Insurance cover doesn't cover damage caused by domestic pets. So if your cat accidentally lights the cooker & your house burns down, it isn't covered!
Also their rebuilding cost was limited to £250,000, which I didn't think was enough as my house is old & has a cellar. Then the guy didn't know whether the £250,000 was including or excluding VAT.
Mine is with Abbey National, but I'll be shopping around next year - I left it too late this time. When I phoned them & told them that Churchill's quote was NEARLY £400 cheaper (yes, really!) they altered the policy a bit and gave me a discount, which knocked £200 off.
My view is that all insurance would be a waste of money if you never get burgled or have a fire etc, but that if you do you don't want a nasty shock.
Another possible recommendation... a friend's husband died last year and Norwich Union paid out her Life Assurance in full on production of the death certificate. Her other policy was with another company (can't remember who) and they gave her all sorts of hassle at a time when she could've done without it. So 3 cheers for Norwich Union.

I will never change from Liverpool Victoria.

We have new for old cover, were broken into in our old house, no sign of forcible entry.

They were brilliant. On the day we reported it they rang about 5 times to check things were OK eg.

they rang to suggest we had the locks changed as keys had been stolen, they organised the locksmith and rang to tell me what time he was coming and then they rang later on to check he had been and I was happy with the job.

We're with Zurich & have been for about 5 years. we've made 2 claims in that time, 6 months ago for burglary. They paid everything promptly, no hassle, and when we came to renew the premium was only very slightly higher (I think it was about £1700 rather than just under £16oo before the last claim).
