radiator leak, carpet in peril

any advice on whether a carpet can be rescued after a fairly major radiator leak? My light coloured lounge carpet has been absolutely saturated (about 2metres square affected) with filthy water from the radiator, the leak is now mended (thanks lovely plumber!) but the carpet is still wet and starting to stink. My husband thinks it can be saved if we can dry it and get it cleaned but I'm not so sure, I'm also concerned about if the water poses a health hazard as it was grim and this part of the lounge is where my DD's sit and play quite often. Has anyone any advice please?

Get it replaced using your home insurance if you're concerned.
