Tax credits and child care

Hi all.
I'm due back to work in 3 weeks and I will be paying child care. How soon do I claim for the child care element? Do I need to be paying the childcare before I let them know or can I inform them before i start?

IIRC you call them the day that your child starts. Hope this helps.
