11yo DS wants to do DS1's paper round....

DS1 is "self employed" doing a paper round of a free paper.

During the Easter holidays, DS2 (nearly 12 yo) wants to do the paper round for fun. DS1 has no objection to this - he gets the money in his bank account, and gets to lounge around doing nothing. - He if was feeling generous he might give DS2 the money, but we haven't got that far as DS2 is happy to do it for free.

DS2 gets to walk around suburbia posting papers, which he seems to really enjoy (he helped DH do it once when DS1 was ill)

So basically my question is, is working, voluntarily for no monetary reward illegal? Is it classed as slavery? Grin

DS2 should get the full payment if he does full job.

You have to be 13 to legally do a paper round.

Even if it was allowed , if your DS2 did the work he should rightly be paid the full amount. Completley unacceptable for DS1 to get the money while sitting on his arse doing nothing.

He must be 13 to do the round. Also, the newspaper company is responsible if your son injures himself or delivers to the wrong house so they will not appreciate someone doing the round instead.

Don't know about the age thing- but absolutely don't let him do it for free. His brother must give him the money!

My DD sometimes fills in for DS paper round, with me supervising as an adult. She gets the money for the day, and often a tip from the newsagent too, plus she's been promised a round on her 13th birthday :)
It's great you've got kids willing to get out and earn some money, but DS2 definitely needs a financial reward!
