The co-op have taken £50 for a £5 purchase

I spent around £5 in the co-op but when I checked the online banking a few days later they have taken just over £50. I didn't get cash back or buy anything that would amount to that. I didn't keep the receipt is there anything I can do?

well, assuming no other till errors on the day then their card machine balance vs till balance totals should have been £45 ish adrift

but without the till/card receipts with time stamps then I'd say you are reliant on good will really.

you should always check the amount on the card machine before putting in your pin though....stabledoor advice, sorry!

It sounds as though the till operator pressed too many buttons when inputting the amount into the machine, so £51.20 instead of £5.12.

I have had this problem before, fortunately I did have my receipt so could prove what I had bought but the clothing store still argued and refused to refund me, they said it was my fault for not checking the amount before inputting my pin and authorising the payment.
The bank were no help as I had authorised the charge.
In the end I had to give up and write the money off.

I hope you have more luck than I did.

The till would have been over when it was cashed up at the end of the night. All you can do is raise it with them but you have no proof if the amount you did spend and when the transaction took place

Either a genuine mistake, or a check out person on the make. You need to call our bank & explain.

Really weird, I went into the co-op and they have no record of any transaction on my card that day, I definitely went in though. Could have paid cash I guess, I don't remember. But going to the bank now to see what they say

If you paid cash how would they have charged anything to your card?

ARoomWithoutAView · 25/03/2015 21:33

I have regularly been charged £14,900 for my monthly car parking which costs £149.00. But then the cashier is a knob. The card gets declined so not a problem. DP goes to co-op once a week and has twice forgotten to take the cash-back. They run the CCTV and always manage to check and have paid the cash over.

How did they check whether you'd paid by card? I work in a shop and I don't think they would be able to do that but it's not a supermarket so maybe works in a different way
