Tax credits and self employment

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help?!

When putting in a claim for tax credits as a self employed claimant, should the total earnings be entered after tax/national insurance deductions or before?

Thanks in advance!

IIRC it's total earnings before tax/ni deductions (just like PAYE) but after expenses (so after your costs have been deducted).
