I've been a SAHM for years and I was a bit worried that my lack of a salary would make things hard.

I opened one with HSBC no problems at all. I went into the branch though, not over interenet or phone. I told them I would pay the £500 a month in from my joint account (which is not with HSBC) and they just took my word for it. It was all up and running before I got round to it.

Its the normal current account with cheque book, debit card ,credit card and internet banking. No fees.

ive got one wtih nationwide which is savings that i can do cheques from and put money inot and out whenever i want but it hasnt got direct debits.

ive also got a flexaccount with them.when i opened it i needed £1 i think.i definitely havent agreed to have £500 a month go into it.

I have a building society account with Norwich And Peterborough. It has a fair sized overdraft so was worried when I went parttime and had ds that they would tell me I wasn't 'allowed' the account anymore !
Have had no problems what so ever. I have had the account for over 10 years and I don't think I opened it with any money.
Halifax always seems to want certain amounts going into their accounts, or they only give certain benefits to people paying in certain amounts.

i opened one with first direct as i'm on direct payments scheme with social services so needed a separate bank account to my normal one and i when i needed to do it my normal bank, barclays, siad i had to go in to the brance to sign some forms which i couldn't do as i'm recovering from serious illness (was miffed as had banked with them for 15 years and they were completely hopeless). anyway, first direct have been fab - i even get a text from them every monday morning to tell me what my account balance is - makes me feel all loved!
