Quick questions about tax credit & childcare

Dd starting nursery next month when i go back to work. I have the exact date and figures of how much childcare will be and my hours etc.

Can i let hmrc know now or is there only a certain amount of time that you can let them know

but you can tell them after, but they will only backdate it for a very short time so don't leave it too long (I can't remember what it is as they reduced it a while back, a month I think).
