Charging credit card before shipping?

I ordered my husbands 30th bday present from an online retailer on the 17th August.
There has been nothing written down anywhere about how long it would take to receive this item. It is a very large item (over £800) and I understand it may take a while. However, my credit cars bill has just arrived and it had already been charged to me?? Is this normal?

Have you contacted the retailer?

They will charge you prior to shipping (they'd be a bit screwed if they dispatched it then your card was declined) but the timeframe is too long now.

Ring/ email them for a tracking number,
