Am single again, and selling the house. Am likely(after paying ex off) to have about 30k profit and after doing up new house was wanting to pay a 30k chunk off my mortgage. Do I need to declare that to tax credits or not??

Tax credits are based on taxable income rather than assets or savings. If you're planning to pay it off the mortgage rather than save it and get (taxable) interest, it won't impact on tax credits and doesn't have to be declared.

Thank you cog. That is certainly my intention.
