HI everyone, I'm looking for a little help in working out whether or not its feasible for me to take a new job I'm hoping to apply for, assuming I were to get it of course!I'm clueless when I comes to tax etc.

I currently work fulltime in the NHS (not nursing so no extra for nights or weekends), Band 6, point 29 so a salary of 30,500. My takehome pay with this is usually around £1800, including a little travel expenses and the usual tax, NI, pension, £100 student loan and union deduction.

A Band 7 post has came up but only half time, 18.75 hours, and initally I dimissed up as not viable for us - pro rata salary the same , as Band 7 starts on point 29 so I would be on the same hourly rate. Halving my fulltime takehome pay obviously gives me a figure of £900 pm. The more I think about it however, won't I just be paying tax on £5000 of my salary given the 10K tax allowance. I also would be below the threshold for student loan repayaments is that correct?

Is there anything Im missing? I'm good at my job but money matters make my head hurt Confused I'm currently on maternity leave and its a stretch but doable If I thought I could bring home the same on a 2 1/2 day per week job Id be jumping at it, but Im scared Im missing somet HI everyone, I'm looking for a little help in working out whether or not its feasible for me to take a new job I'm hoping to apply for, assuming I were to get it of course!I'm clueless when I comes to tax etc.

Try www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk - it's pretty good at helping you work out net pay.

Cindy34 · 09/07/2014 22:03

www.mranchovy.com/calc/ is another calculator that may help.

marleymooo · 09/07/2014 22:45

You'll probably go to point 30 if it's a promotion from one band to another if it is comparable to local government. Will you then qualify for tax credits?

marleymooo · 09/07/2014 23:23

Oh I didnt know that thanks. No, I checked the tax credits calculator ,just and only just over the limit with husbands wage. Pity it's a really great job. I might look into seeing if they would allow a seconment opportunity.
