Direct Debit taken the day before payment date ..overdrawn ..charges!

I thought they couldn't do that as per the Direct Debit guarantee, the payment date was on the Saturday , I was due to be paid on the Monday so was confident there would be enough £ in my account then to pay the direct debit as it would go out on Monday not the Friday as that is how I have always thought it worked (it seemed to with a couple of other direct debits that were due on the same date).

I contacted the company and they have said that as they said in an email when I set up the direct debit (it was done by email no mandates etc) that the payment would be taken 'in or around' the date, they are allowed to take it before the date (if it falls on a weekend) as they have followed the rules and 'notified me in advance in writing.

Is this right? Seems a bit unfair to me ..or am I just grumpy because of nasty bank charge letter

It is right unfortunately.

they are correct, ours have always worked that way. we have a lot of DDs due to DH's hobbies/professional subscriptions and stuff, they always go out on the Friday before if it's a weekend or bank holiday that the due date falls on.

i thought this was a bit Hmm at first when we moved in together, but it does kind of make sense, and seems to be consistent (we've been with different banks, they all treated those DDs the same).

Explain to the bank, if it is a one off with your bank charges they usually drop them.

My stupid bank natwest tried to convince me about "value" Mondays. Wen my mortgage payment is due they take it out on a Saturday non banking day as they can't process it on a Monday banking day this has left me and my son without food via a tesco delivery as my wages don't go in til the actual day somethings can get processed on a Monday obviously

Sorry for the rant!!
