My friend is about to get divorced and will have a few thousand pounds after paying off debts and a very low income from her part time job.
She needs to house herself and two kids. Assume no help from XH.
No council houses available.
No money to buy a house.

if she rents in the private sector will she get some or all her rent paid?

Yes, she should get housing benefit and may qualify for a rent deposit scheme . HTH.
