Probelsm with my gas and electric supplier please help

I'll try to make this simple but even I'm confused.

In February I changed supplier from Npower to Scottish Power as Npower kept ramping my direct debit and being generally hostile when I phoned them.

A few months before I changed, Npower arranged for me to have a new gas meter installed. However they clearly haven't any record of having done so.

I gave Scottish Power my opening meter readings and they informed Npower who then sent me a closing electric bill on 28 February. By the end of March I'd still not received a gas bill so I phoned them and they said it would be with me shortly. At the end of April I phoned again and got the same answer.

Two weeks ago I called and was told the matter was with their investigation department as I'd given a reading that was lower than my previous reading and they'd agreed a new estimated reading with Scottish Power. They said they'd bill me based on the estimated reading.

Now Scottish Power want an meter reading and are refusing to accept my reading because it is lower than the estimate they have agreed with Npower. They've now sent me an estimated bill and also told me that if I don't submit my reading on line I will lose the discount I get for having an online account. I've emailed them twice to explain the situation but only received an auto response followed by more reminders to submit my reading on line.

I still haven't had a closing bill from Npower so no idea how much I owe them (and I don't trust them anyway) . I can't submit my reading to Scottish Power. It seems Npower have had their revenge for me moving supplier.

Please tell me what to do.

Sorry this is so long

How is your meter reading lower than your previous reading?

You'll struggle until you can work that out. It looks like the meter has been tampered with otherwise, and that'sI a xromibcriminal offence.

Any chance you've put the numbers in wrong, or got them mixed up?

ilovepowerhoop · 01/06/2013 11:51

the reading will maybe be lower as a new gas meter was fitted so the readings will not match up if they have no record of the meter being changed. Did you take a note of the readings on the old and new meters when the meter got changed?

thefuturesnotourstosee · 01/06/2013 11:59

Yes its to do with the meter being changed.

I gave them a reading from the new meter. Npower decided it was wrong so estimated a reading based on the old meter readings.

I didn't take final meter readings on old meter and the new meter started at 00000 and goes up from there. I never even thought of running into this sort of issue.

when our electricity meter got changed they (the guy who changed it) wrote the final meter reading down on a wee sticker next to the meter. Could you see whether they did that with yours?

IAmNotAMindReader · 01/06/2013 13:54

As ilovepowerhoop said when a meter is changed the old meters final reading should be written on a sticker and stuck to the new meter.

Thank you so much the sticker is there. I hadn't even thought to look. Its got the old meter number as well.

I'll email Scottish Power with the information in the hope it will help.
