£900+ of bank charges

I feel a bit bad making this my first post as I've lurked here for ages and now I'm coming on for the first time asking for help! But I just don't know what to do or where to go.
I've just this minute been told by my bank that I've got £900+ worth of charges to be debited from my current account.
In excess of £500 will go tomorrow and 400 next month.

They won't allow me to spread these charges over more than 2 payments-and if I enter into a payment plan with them the I have to surrender all cards and cancel all dd's and so's.

Is there any escape from this nightmare.

Before anyone asks the majority of the problems I have are due to late payment by the companies I have done work for.

Would be so so grateful for any advice.

I'm sorry mtalo, I can't advise about the bank charges, but just wanted to say hello and welcome to mn :)

Hope you get the nightmare sorted out!

I've been there. the banks love you when the money's coming in, but one late payment and you're screwed.

we didn't get anywhere - we did do the card surrender thing, and it's why I will never recommend barclays. BUT who did you speak to at the bank? is it worth speaking to the manager (or another manager)? is the 900 quid definately right? have you seen \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=2230&threadid=166668&stamp=060525133553\this thread?}

Thanks spacedonkey. I'm not sure that I'll get any "answer" as such but if there's anyone out there who knows what my options are then I'd be grateful for the advice.

have you got a bank manager you can actually go in and talk face to face with?

I'm amazed that they've let you amass £900 worth of charges- how long has this been going on?

What are the charges for? If exceeding your overdraft limit I suspect that they should have called you in to discuss the situation ages ago, so should be called to account for that.
