I ask for a friend who is on IS HB etc. her DS aged 16 needs to travel 7 miles to college and it costs £180 pa for a half fare travel pass. The LA is Calderdale. She has asked if we can help out but I know from past experience that we wil only ger a tiny bit back

It's generally down to the discretion of the college but they could apply for a bursary here
What about trying Freecycle for a push bike 7 miles isn't that far on a bike?

That breaks down to £6/week for a 30 week year. As well as the bike suggestion, could the 16yo not get a Saturday job or something to make up the shortfall?

Colleges give a bursary for travel costs, lunch and course expenses (tool kits etc.) if a family is claiming benefits or has a household income of £26,000 or less. You can usually get a bursary form from the college and is usually paid half-termly. I have been dealing with this quite a lot recently as I work with students who are able to claim.
