Tax credits... think I've been turned down?

I contacted the TC helpline about 4 weeks ago, as a friend suggested that due to a change in my circumstances (DH and I separating) I may be eligible for some help.

I am renting, Ex has moved back to house we were letting out (different part of country) he is now paying mortgage on that whilst we try to sell it and all bills. I am renting and paying some bills in this house. Ex is having to help me out as I only work 17hrs and have childcare costs. He is paying water and electric for me, until (I hoped) I may be eligible for some help.

Ex has money to cover the mortgage and bills etc. but very little surplus. I am happy with our 'agreement' until the house is sold.

TC helpline said I was eligible to claim as a single claim - I did - have heard nothing so have phoned today and they have said I will have to wait to receive a letter that was sent yesterday as she cannot help me.

Having read various threads I see that they often do checks on claims and am wondering if this is the case.
I have changed the council tax, banking is my sole account, Mortgage is in Ex name (always has been) electoral role I may still be on old house address as moved here only few months ago and electoral role register form only done end July. Is there anything else I can do? Only separated at beginning of July so some of these changes have not yet taken effect eg my first ctx payment is due end of this month. I am increasing my hours in Sept. but until house sells I am going to struggle.

Ring your local council, you can be added to the electoral role at any time if you ask to be.
