paying for a car that I have bought privately

I've paid a small cash deposit tonight and we've agreed that I'll collect the car tomorrow evening. I've just been on line to my bank and they no longer do bankers drafts.
If I transfer the funds to the seller tomorrow during banking hours and he is then conveniently not available for me to collect the car, I'm stuffed!

How do you do this safely?

TIA

Postal order?

mckenzie · 28/05/2012 22:32

the maximum would appear to be £250. and the fee for that is £12.50. The car was quite expensive Smile so I'd need lots of £250

Cash? Suppose it depends how much it is though

I paid cash for mine ( was only £2500 5 yr ago). Just went in the bank to withdraw and funnily enough the teller asked me what my plans were for the money same time her colleague at next window asked the guy she was serving. Both of us said " buying a car" at exactly the same time. He seemed to have a much bigger pile of cash than me tho, so I figured he'd prob be the one to get mugged!! Didn't stop me crapping myself all the way home on the bus! Recommend if you do this, get a lift off someone :)

What do your bank recommend as the most secure way to do it?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/05/2012 22:46

Why does an online transfer need to be done during banking hours? Confused When I last bought a car, I used the seller's laptop, in their dining room, to do the transfer and all went well.

FrillyMilly · 28/05/2012 22:56

Most bank transfers go through immediately now. Can't you just don't when you go to pick it up? Failing that take cash.

thanks guys, I'm going to go the instant payment route via the internet on the laptop. I thought £10k was the maximum but it seems that's the maximum per transaction but you can do more than one transaction so will be ok.
