Rent unpaid this month, owed money from clients and at risk of eviction. Shit.

Can you claim housing benefit? Crisis loan? You need to go and see someone at the CAB, they are really helpful.

You need to be 2 months in arrears before you LL can try to evict you. Do you have any money you can pay now - even just a token amount £50? £10 even - then you are not classed as being a full month in arrears as you have made a part payment.

But - ring your LL/agent, explain the situation and then offer the token payment. If they know what is going on they will be more likely to be fair with you. If you just don't pay then they don't know whats going on and it will get their back up. Ask them if you can pay this months rent off at £x per week/month and that you will pay next months rent as normal in addition to this.

Our housing benefit office is a joke. Last time we claimed, I was accused of fraud due to lack of communication in their department. I'm so fed up of being poor. I work hard and my dh has anxiety issues which affect his working. It's shit.

Can you tell us a bit more about your situation? Might be able to come up with some ideas to help? Has something changed recently?

Gumby · 25/04/2012 21:03

Can your dh get sickness benefit ?

Mabelface · 26/04/2012 11:33

Things are a little better now. A very good friend has helped us with the rent and clients have started to pay. We're still not out of the woods, but at least we won't get kicked out. Quick background - DH is self employed and had a period last year where he didn't work for a month due to anxiety, and we've not caught up since. I work on average 20 hours per week and am looking for something with more hours. I did panic, I have to admit. I've a load of stuff to go on ebay so that will help with food and stuff. Thank you for listening to my panic driven rant. x

Glad things are a bit better.
Definitely would eBay as much as possible.

My DH and I were in a similar position not so long ago, my DH is also self employed. I would advise you to apply for housing benefit, it can really be a short term help. Obviously as your DH is self employed, your income is not consistent so you have to keep on top of reporting major changes but it was a good short term help to us.
