Can I claim any benefits?

I hope this doesn't sound money grabbing!

I am a qualified teacher but after leaving my job in February due to being bullied I have done a little bit of supply. I have unfortunately quickly become too unwell to work due to self harming and anxiety and I am now an inpatient on an NHS psychiatric unit. I am here voluntarily following advice from the crisis team so I can go home and out and about when I am supervised by friends and family but I am pretty rubbish so I think I will probably we an inpatient for the next month or so? I can't be alone for any period of time due to the risk I pose to myself.

My husband works full time and earns an ok salary (not a higher rate tax payer), we don't get any benefits at the moment. We own our house and can pay the mortgage on DH's salary.

Money is ok, but obviously me not earning my normal teaching salary has put a dent in things. My husband said that because I can't work because I am unwell I might be eligible for benefits, I know I can't get job seekers because I chose to leave my job.

I really hope I don't sound greedy, just wondering if I would be able to claim anything to help us out.

I'm sorry you are having such a hard time at the moment.
You probably qualify for contributory ESA and possibly even DLA if you need supervision to prevent harm.

Have look at the rethink advice page and see if you qualify.

A few years ago i claimed job seekers after choosing to leave a job. I think as long as you have a valid reason (mine was relocation) then they wont have a problem with it. You could also see if you are entitled to working tax credit on your husbands behalf

The other website to look at is called entitled to which will look at what you have coming in ad work things out for you.
