Cost of removers?

We are hoping to move house when we've saved enough money, and as well as deposit etc, i want to be sure we have enough for all the other costs like stamp duty, fees etc. Can anyone give me any sort of idea how much removal companies like Pickfords cost?

I realise it's a bit like asking how long a piece of string is, but any sort of idea or guidelines would be interesting! Not at the stage yet where I could get a quote, just really testing the water....

Thanks!

I phone a local compancy and got a quote of 517, that was with us packing and unpacking, I think it was a further 170 for them to do it.

I am moving 400 miles with a transit van sized load and was quoted various prices between 575 and 800 quid, with me doing packing and unpacking.

Prohibitive: I'm hiring a van and doing it myself!

We're moving tomorrow and our removals are costing £750.
All packing and unpacking done by us.

We moved in September, but within the same town. Can't remember exact cost but for removals only (we did our own packing/unpacking of boxes) it was definitely less than £300. We didn't go with one of the big names though, went for a smaller local company - and they were really good.

A local small company charged about £1000 to pack and move us 100 miles, we had to have two big vans rather than one of those lorries as the lorry wouldn't fit down the new drive. They packed one day then loaded up the final bits the next morning. The packing bit of that was just over £200 pounds.

I think we paid about £2K, but we moved from Liverpool to Plymouth! Packing was 10% of the move cost, and insurance was another 10% (worth checking if your home insurance will cover you for this, but make sure you're insured up to the hilt!). They will come round and do a quotation for free

Man and a van is much cheaper, but there is a massive difference in service levels (as I've found out in the past )

Forgot to mention that our cost (for the small, local firm) included the van, a driver and 2 packing men.
