Anyone ever been quoted 3rd party, fire & theft being more expensive than fully comp?

We have two cars whose insurance is up for renewal in a week. We can't afford the fully comp quotation they've given us so I called to see how much they'd quote for 3rd party, fire & theft only to be told it was £50 more for the two cars Hmm

I was incredulous, man on the phone said it happens quite a lot. Does it? Really? Or did he misunderstand what I was asking and just requote me fully comp again or something?

It's almost half what we've been quoted if we use a comparison website so not too worried, just astounded because I've never heard this before. Has anyone else had this?

I got a quote for an old car a year or so ago, 3rd party was more so I think it's quite normal.

apparently the fact that you are asking for third party makes you seem less responsible in their eyes Hmm

??? But you can't not have third party cover!

Yes, Martin Lewis was talking about this on the radio during the week. For some insurers the fact that you ask for fully comp means that they think you are a more responsible person in general and so will be less risky.

It is counter intuative but apparently true - its probably on the MSE website somewhere

It's even true for teenagers, as I discovered recently.
