How do I check my credit rating?

charliecat · 26/09/2005 18:43

Someones ordered over a grands worth of stuff in my name and I want to see if they have applied, hopefully unsuccessfully, for anything else.
Also how do I stop mail from going to that address. I no longer live there. I am getting my mail redirected.
And any other tips so no more unexpected bills drop through my door.

Blimey!! How did you manage to find out? So lucky that you did! If you go to experian.co.uk they will give you a free credit report (have to register with a card but you can then cancel it)

charliecat · 26/09/2005 18:46

They got the goods and I got the bill. Royal mail delivers the bill. Courier orders the goods. Cheers

charliecat, you can order your credit history from Experian and Equifax (there's also another whose name escapes me right now) for £2 a pop, much cheaper (but slower) than the online service. I can't see how to do that now on the Experian website, I think you go part-way through the online trial order and then do something different. Anyway: Phone contact details for Experian , Some details for Equifax , including a number to call to put a fraud report on your credit history.

You'll need to have a note put on your credit file with these agencies to say you've been defrauded, have you reported them to the police?

Zephyrcat · 26/09/2005 18:58

I would do a standard letter to everyone just saying 'Dear I am writing to notify you that I moved from * on and my current address is . I notified you of this (whenever you changed your address over) It has since come to my attwntion that the new occupants of have ordered goods from my account using mail sent to me at that address. I have informed the police who are taking the matter in hand. I would appreciate if you would contact me to arrange a possible password (or something like that) for my future orders to prevent this from happening again. I would also like a copy of a statement showing my recent orders so that I can check if any fraudulent orders have been placed....... yours sincerely **

Zephyrcat · 26/09/2005 19:00

Free trial of experian? What will happen is in about 4/5 days you will get a letter from them with a PIN number on which you'll need to log onto your file online. Your whole report will come up including anyone you are financially associated with. Just print it off then cancel your registration Hope you get it sorted

charliecat · 26/09/2005 19:49

Me too, cheers again

Hmmm.... might not have registered on there yet. Do you know if they actually got the stuff they ordered? If they did, ring experian soon as you can and tell them what's going on - they'll have all the right info for you
