barclays not submitting ref no when making bank tansfer in branch

I just got a reminder last week, that they have not received my payment.
I went to the branch to make the transfer, usually use the self serve mashines there but they were out of order.
it turns out that the ref no was not submitted but only the branch name of the bank. so the receiving company could not allocate the money...
has this happened to you?
I am complaining to the bank, because I think this is ridiculous!

Happened to me over a year ago with a Council Tax installment. Good job I'd kept the slip, as the first I knew was when I was threatened with enforcement action for the "missing" payment.

The Council knew what had happened the second I said "Barclays", and told me they were talking to Barclays to see if they would handlevpayments like every other retail bank. Looks like the answer was a no.

Use a different method of paying then.

I do. They're not my bank - only ever tried to pay Council Tax, following the instructions in the council's How To Pay leaflet -as council banks with Barclays. It seems that people are still getting inconvenienced, and that Barclays has an inferior system to other High Street banks.
