Ignorant question about claiming benefits for DS1 (18)

DS1 was supposed to be going to university this year, but got better grades than he expected, so has chosen to re-apply for next year, to a 'better' university than the one he had a place at.

We had not planned for him to have a gap year, so have nothing in place re work/volunteering/travelling etc.

We (DH and I) have made it clear that this is not a year for dossing around, and that the bank of mum & dad will not be funding an all-expenses-paid trip so that he can travel. He is expected to get a job or, at the very least, find something voluntary.

So far, he hasn't had much joy finding a job, although we're hopeful that as people finish their holidays/go back to university that there will be jobs available - and certainly it would seem that he should be able to get some kind of Christmas temporary job.

If he can't find work, though, would he qualify for any benefits? I know nothing about the benefit system/what might be available, as (very thankfully) we have never had to claim.

It's especially an issue at the moment, as we will no longer be paid the child benefit for him, as he is not in full time education and, more seriously, my business looks as if it may be going under, so I will have no income either.

Thanks in advance for any help/pointing me in the right direction!

I'm sure he can claim jobseekers benefit at 18

LilQueenie · 04/09/2010 13:01

I think he will need to apply for JSA. However it takes about 5 weeks I think to get anywhere so best to apply now . You will be expected to look for work whilst claiming it anyway.

As he is 18 I think he will be able to claim Jobseekers Allowance himself. He will need to contact your local Job Centre Plus for details and application packs. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Will investigate JSA.

Can he go to college and get extra qualifications?

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/09/2010 14:31

It's a possibility, although not sure he really needs other qualifications right now! TBH, we'd both prefer him to get a job, not just because of the financial side of things but also because we think he would benefit in terms of his maturity.

JSA until he gets a job. Your Child Benefit and CTC is probablt stopping around now.

He needs to call 0800 055 6688 on Monday as claims are only paid from when you contact and rarely backdated. Please dont bother with applying online....its really isnt quicker.

Don't qualify for any CTC, but yes, Child Benefit stops in September.

Thanks for the phone number. Will get him to call on Monday.
