Hmm... can I just ask why you have started 6 threads pretty much all the same?

It is for one of the book circles. If you look through the book swap section there are oodles of threads similar.

It's a book by KA (and it says Cocodrillo inside).

I'm not quite half way through - the present tense narrating of some parts is getting to me a bit but I'm getting more into it as there have been some mysterious references to things that have happened between the time frames that I have seen and now I'm keen to find out what's been going on.

The bits in the past are less grating, although none of the characters is especially sympathetic. I do like seeing different times and glimpses of "normal" family life. Around WWII you tend to get more of a picture of average families, but everything I've read around WWI and interwar time periods always seems to centre around people who live in very large houses.
