Sherby, I finished the book last night! I won't lie to you, my heart sank when I saw it as it wouldn't have been my first choice but isn't that the beauty of these swaps . I did think it was a bit anthropological text books in parts but the characters did become endearing and I was left with a sense of 'oh, I wonder what happens in the next one' which surprised me.

I found most of it really interesting from a feminist point of view in-as-much as I felt frustrated by the social systems exhibited in the novel and enjoyed the response that it provoked in me. I think it gave me a greater appreciation of the society in which we live where I am able to pursue any activity that interests me and verbalise my opinions without recrimination.

If I took all of this out of it then surely that must make it a good choice- it also made me chastise myself for the neutrality of my own choice of book- I didn't want to send out anything that people were a bit about but I wish I had now. Well done you.

Oh and have you read the other books?

shootfromthehip · 17/01/2009 13:59

Sorry that should be 'textbook' as opposed to 'text books'

sherby · 18/01/2009 16:58

I was exactly the same when I was given it years ago. But I really got to like it, I love the strength of the lead character and the fact that you don't really come across many fiction books set in that time frame.

It was in my pile of maybe books to send out for a while before I decided on it. I went for it in the end because I thought I had a good chance that nobody had already come across it and I knew that it was a book I wouldn't usually pick up and buy myself

shootfromthehip · 18/01/2009 17:00

Have you read any of the others?

sherby · 18/01/2009 17:28

No not yet, that one was given to me ages ago. I think it is quite a popular series though, seems to be quite a few on ebay

Just received from shoot, I must admit my first reaction was 'this ones going to be a hard slog' but then my DH saw the book and got really excited. Apparently its his favorite book, he read it 15 years ago and says the plot is still very fresh in his mind, he is notoriously difficult to please when it comes to books so I cant wait to begin it!

sherby · 25/01/2009 14:21

Oh good glad to hear it! I love it and DH did too

I have a theory what this book might be, just from these comments.

I kind of hope I'm wrong, because I'd like it to be a book I haven't read, but if it is what I think it is I won't be sad at all.

What a great read, I plan to read the others in the series.
The characterization in this book is brilliant, it really encouraged me believe that is how society was and a person like the main character could really exist in such an environment.
I have to agree with SHOOT about the limits placed upon women in such a society and the attitudes towards them was frustrating but then there was the main character who pushed against such attitudes giving us a more feminist voice to balance the story out. I'd like to think even way back then there might have been women with feminist ideals.

It's also made me realize I have so much to learn about my DH, I would never have though this book would mean so much to him. SO strange when a book can actually make you think more highly of you DH!
