Hope everyone hasn't read it already....

This was an enjoyable, intelligent, quick read . Sad and funny at the same time, it had stuff to say about society but without being preachy. Some things rang very true from my memories of the part-time jobs in retail I had when I was a student. It's a book I've been meaning to read for some time, so I'm glad that I've had the opportunity to read it now, thanks to Flossie . However, I didn't LOVE LOVE LOVE it, so I think some reviewers have been a bit overzealous in their praise of it. Shouldn't have listened to Jonathan Coe, maybe, since I don't particularly like his books!

at you not liking Jonathan Coe, Coco! Although I was really disappointed by The Rain Before it Falls...

I know exactly what you mean about not completely loving it - I really liked the little vignettes between chapters though. But I thought the ending wasn't very well managed - written as if it was a major surprise and shock, which it wasn't especially.

I know, I think I'm the only woman alive who doesn't rate Coe!

I really liked this book. It reminded me a bit of Kate Atkinson with the style of writing. I thought she did well to be able to say something serious but still have some humour throughout the book, just little bits here & there.

I think there are some parts of the book that will resonate with everyone such as working in a shop, for me it was the school with the angry teacher, I think everyone had one of those!

I agree the ending wasn't a huge surprise but for a first book it was a good effort!

FlossieT · 18/02/2009 23:17

So glad you liked it! I'm a bit bothered it's going to be one people have read already as it's been out for a while.... and it looks like it's going to be MN Book of the Month too!! Oh well.

Enjoyable quick read, I didn't see the ending coming so that was a surprise. Although I did find it slightly depressing, not sure why. I was premenstral when I read it though so that probably had something to do with it lol

Quite enjoyed this book as the subject was interesting. Thought the writing was enjoyable enough and the characters were quite likeable. Hmm, really am hedging my bets, as it were, with my opinions on this one. Not like me
