Now how do you go about talking about a book without giving away the title or too much of the story line?
So, I found this to be gripping enough to want to read it quickly but no so gripping that I couldn't put it down for sleep. The beginning was slightly jumbled, until I got the hang of his 'format' then it became very enjoyable. I won't say anything about the storyline at all, except to say that you will need some hankies at the end.

I was dreading reading this book as I knew a) it was going to be sad and b) the subject matter is something I don't like to dwell on as it makes me emotional and angry.

I read it in one sitting and felt I needed to know more. While I was reading it I was intrigued that the family's name was the same as the author's although it was classed as fiction. I googled the author and found this interesting article in the Guardian about Grimbert's life and his reasons for writing the book.

The one part of the book I didn't think was satifactorily explained was Hannah's 'suicide' and although Grimbert tried to explain in the article what he thought was her reason for doing it, it didn't seem enough to me and, of course, we will never know.

I would never have bought this book myself but it was a good read.

A good short easy read, like wheresthehamster i found Hannah and her sons suicide confusing. dont know how telling the guards that he was her son made them arrest mother and child.

but other than that book was ok, didnt really fascinate me.

She showed them her real papers as well as the fake ones.....

Thanks for that link, wheresthehamster. I've just read it, and although it explains some things, it also raises more questions for me. I'm going to try and read it again in a couple of weeks before i have to send it on.

I didn't even notice it was (sort of ) autobiographical until I looked on here.

That link is interesting; afterwards I was wondering how autobiographical the book was. I thought it was really moving, and raised some issues that I've not come across in other books about the Holocaust-- the parents' perpetuating the work of the Nazis in a way by obliterating the existence of Hannah and Michel, eradicating their own last name; their complacence that the deportations were happening to 'other' kinds of Jews until it was too late.

i read this at one sitting, it really moved me it was gripping and so dreadful. the best one I've read so far thank you so much for choosing it

I thought this was a good little book, although the style and characterisation was maybe a little too sparse. I have to admit having a small blub at the poor little boy being taken away without his toy dog.

I enjoyed tis book, but felt there were plenty of unanswered questions.

An interesting choice, and the short chapters were good!
