hope it's ok me starting the thread AP; I wanted to get on and write while I remembered to!

I was all ready not to like this book. And I didn't really at the beginning.

But as the book went on I was totally gripped. It reminded me of all those great books that stop us short and tell us to remember we are all a part of humanity and carry a responsibility to act humanely and shoulder our joint burden of maintaining civilisation - like Germinal, or Alone in Berlin. A wonderful book.

Again AP, you have educated me! A really moving book about a period of recent history that I didn't know enough about. A book that really makes you think about the liberties we take for granted and how easily that could change. I found the character of Arrow particularly interesting, how you could end up in a situation that you abhor so much that you would rather die when it would be easy to carry on what you are doing and live. Not sure I would ever be so noble. Thanks AP!
