Have to say I struggled a bit with this book and didn't manage to finish it before posting on (there was also the small matter of going on holiday in the middle of July and forgetting to take the book - doh!)

Based on what I did manage to read - it was well-written and definitely created tension. Reminded me of watching Das Boot with DH...

I have to hold my hands up and say that I didn't even attempt this book. It couldn't have been further from up my street - every time I thought about starting another book looked more tempting.

I couldn't get on with this either ........ did try but really didn't like the style in which it was written, too much narrative so I am afraid I gave up. I generally like books written in this period of history but not this 'type'.

Would love to know the reasons for choosing this particular book?

I was quite pleased to see this, my dad reads his stuff endlessly and I'd never got around to trying. But I have to say I skimmed it after ploughing through the first 50 pp or so. I found all the technical jargon just too dense and even struggled to keep track of the characters as I got lost between their names and their ranks / titles. But skimming did mean that although I got the gist of the story, I missed a lot of the emotional impact I'm guessing. It was a war sector I had only limited knowledge of, so that was interesting and it was obviously closely researched, but I'm just not enough of an enthusiast to be able to plunge into it in quite that depth.

Well, I battled on with this but gave up soon after the sea of oil- covered burning bodies.

My issue was that I know nothing about ships - don't know my fo'scle from my aft deck. Nor do I know anything about the ranks and duties of Naval officers. Or much about war or weapons. Or the geography of Scapa flow and the Arctic oceans (although the map at the front helped a bit). I've only been to sea on a Cross Channel ferry.

All of which combined to mean that I simply could not conjour (?sp) up any images in my head at all, just could not imagine the settings.

The only part of the book which was ever likely to engage me would be the 'human interest' aspects of the men themselves but I found all the technical descriptions so hard to follow, I couldn't sustain any interest in the plot.

Aside from all that, I did think it was a slightly odd choice!
Why did you opt for this book to share, Housewife? Just curious.

I really struggled with this book. I am normally quite persistent with books I have started but I couldn't get in to this one at all. I think it's fair to say this is not my sort of topic to read about. sorry housewife
