I rarely read non fiction and this is not something I would have considered under other circumstances, so I am very glad I rejoined the circle and had the opportunity to read this book.

It was initially interesting, but the second half, telling the tales of the men in the water was horrific, and totally compelling. I am now embarrased that I hadn't even heard of this event.

Thankyou for including this book. I think it will stay with me forever.

I also wasn't aware of this tragedy. I'm glad I've read about it, though did find it quite hard to read as I found it a bit upsetting! But thank you NoKnownAllergies for introducing this book to the group.

I know very little about the war in the pacific and wasn't aware of this event at all. My DH read the book after me as he is a history nut (and was aware of it) and we both enjoyed it, if enjoyed is the right word.

I agree with Jas that it was very compelling and utterly horrific. Very hard to read but a story that needs to be told and I felt I owed it to the men to finish their story. I couldn't believe how the captain was blamed for the tragedy and it took so long to clear his name.

Very glad I've read this and has inspired me to find out more about this part of WW2. Thanks NoKnownAllergies.

An utterly compelling account of a horrific tragedy written in such a way as to keep me reading page after page without stopping. This is not my normal genre of choice but I couldn't put this book down and the story will stick with me for some time I think.

I am glad I got through to the end, I would not like to read it again though. Once is enough!

Very good indeed. Although I suspect (like my own book!) not everyones cup of tea.

Embarrassed to say that I didn't even get started on this one before 1 Jan rolled around . Have posted it on today.

Inititially I thought I wouldn't want to read this but as Pascha says it is really compelling, very 'easy to read' but with a real human story yet not over-sentimental. I couldn't put it down, just wanted to know what happened to all the individuals.
