Threatened miscarriage/ ectopic - any experiences?

Hi there, I've had IVF and had a positive pregnancy test after only one cycle - all seemed to be going well.
Only tested on Weds, so am only 4 1/2 weeks. Last night I turned over in bed and had a sharp pain around my left ovary - enough to wake me up. This morning found I'd had quite a bit of brown bleeding in the night.

Hospital have doubled my progesterone dose and said that my early scan (booked for 7 wks) can be brought forward if need be. I still have this pain around my left ovary - they thought it could still be due to mild hyperstimualtion but said they would keep an eye on it in case ectopic, but it's too early to see or do anything about ectopic. Also apparently ectopic comes with shoulder pain which I haven't got.

The bleeding has eased off, though not completely gone.

Anyone got any experience of this? I'm 43 so I know the miscarriage risk is high

I know it is scary. It's also totally unfair that the excitement of a pregnancy should be marred with all of this worry.

You're only 51/2 weeks, so if this pregnancy is ectopic, yes, it probably is too early for anything terribly dramatic to happen, but do watch out for any pain and get yourself to A&E if anything happens.

Is there someone you can get to come and stay the night with you when your DH is working? It might lessen the stress.

Hi there, I wanted to say that I had a follow up scan, and they found the pregnancy on the screen, all in correct place. I've never been so relieved!

They'd been in a pnic mainly because my hormone levels were 5000 (and they should have seen something at that level) and also because the horomones weren't doubling.

Both mysteries are solved now. It was twins, which explained the high hormones, but one was very small for dates so they think it is failing to thrive and will problably come to nothing, hence the lack of doubling. I have a scan 3 weeks time to check how things are doing. Now I just have to get to 12 weeks which seems like a mountain!

Thank you all so much for you help and support through a truly awful time. I really hope that those of you who have had ectopics have success in the future. I will be keeping an eye out on the boards to see how you get on.

That's wonderful news. I hope things go smoothly from news. It's sad about your twin, but lovely to hear you have one baby doing well. Best of luck.
