Hi
I had a mmc at 10weeks a few months ago. After a horrendous time physically with medical management, ERPC and infection I am now back to normal. Got my period 5 weeks after ERPC and then conceived again straight away! 5 weeks pg now. It is all much sooner really than I am ready for but we thought we'd try again as could have taken a while and lo and behold pg again straight away. Of course I am delighted if it all works out, but also absolutley petrified both of another mc but also of getting sick again- I was very ill after mc.

So does anyone know the statistics on mmc specifically- is there any more chance of a mmc again? I think I might cope if I just started to bleed as then body would be letting me know it's not going right but I am so scared of finding out again at a scan that it's no longer viable.

Also related question...I have been offered early scans from 7 weeks and do people find that reassuring? I am a bit phobic of going for scans again!!

hi cloth, firstly im sorry you have been through mmc. really is awful isn't it.

while i dont know specifically the stats on recurrent mmc, from personal experience it has happened 3 times.

there will be loads of people on here who had had mmc then gone on to have healthy pg's

with regards to scans, i persoanlly would take them whenever offered, i have mc'd at 8+ wks 3 times so a scan at 9 weeks would be a massive reassuance to me.

it is such a personal choice though.

all the best.

Hi cloth,
I too am sorry about your mmc...i had one at 12 weeks last sept and im glad to report that im sat here with a 31 week pregnancy kicking and moving inside me.

The chances of another miscarraige is the same as anyone has in any pregnancy 1 in 3 or 1 in 5 depends on who you choose to believe

However the chance of another mmc is lower, mmc isnt as common as a mc, because usually your body will alert when something is up...i had a very nice doctor who told me all of this but i cant remember the figures and stuff...sorry!

As for the scans, i had one at 5+4 and it caused no end of worry because nothing could be seen, the one at 7+1 didnt really help either, and i wish i listened to my doctors advice and waited up the 8 week mark.....

Congrats on your pregnancy, it going to be hard because if what you have been through but seek help and reasurrance as and when you need it or else you will end up going slightly mad!

if you have had 1-2 mc then your chances of mc again are the same as someone who has never mc

I would have a scan around 7-8 weeks
You will still worry but I was happier to know things were okay so far instead of getting to 12 weeks and finding it all failed much earlier

Good luck!

Hi Cloth,

I'm sorry you went through an MMC, and that things were so bad after.

I had an MMC in August and was lucky enough to get pregnant after the first period I had as well. I know what you mean about feeling that you could cope with bleeding - I was really scared that I was going to be "conned" by my body again into believing that all was OK and then have the devastating news at the 12 week scan again when you are supposed to be safer and through the first trimester.

When I had my MMC, the EPAU gave me their number to call and book a scan direct which I had at about 6 weeks. I found it very reassuring - there was not a lot to see so early but seeing something made a big difference.

I then started to get anxious again a few weeks later so booked in for a private scan at 10 weeks. Best £50 I have spent this year - I was very nervous but it was magical and I am looking forward to my dating scan next week.

Good luck!

I have had:

  • MMC at 12 weeks, discovered at routine scan
  • DS (now 2)
  • MMC at 10 weeks, although this did start with some bleeding which caused me to seek a scan which confirmed no development beyond 6 weeks.

Sadly MMC seem pretty common. Not sure what the statistics are because it depends on your definition of the term. In many cases a miscarriage will begin with bleeding after the embryo has stopped developing and has no heartbeat.

For peace of mind I plan to have a scan around the 8-9 week mark next time. 7 weeks seems a bit early, I would feel things could easily go wrong still. I know what you mean about the physical dread of the scan room, I don't think that ever leaves you but the reassurance of seeing the heartbeat is incredible.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and be kind to yourself!

Lunatic so very sorry it looks like you are having another loss and hope they are kind to you at the EPU. Both my ERPCs at East Surrey have been pretty straightforward and almost a relief to get things over with.

Hope you get a nice lunch today anyway.
