Were currently trying to conceive our second child, weve only being trying for just over a month. I've just found out that one of the moms I regularly talk to and see at my daughters playgroup has suffered a miscarriage at around 7 weeks. I'm not very educated in the area of miscarriage, and I suppose I'm abit naive, I just wondered whether It was "normal" I know that's not the right word, I just wish I could offer her some help and advice. I'm now worrying for myself even though I'm not even pregnant yet, I'm almost 22. Are miscarriages more common as you get older?Has anyone around our age got any experiences they could share with me, and any advice on what I could say/do to try and help her. Thankyou x

My first miscarriage was when I was 23. Miscarriages due to chromosomal problems do become more common with age but they are fairly common at all ages. There are plenty of other causes of miscarriage that are not associated with age at all. My next pregnancy resulted in my lovely daughter.

i had my first at 19, second at 21 then my 3rd at 27.

You are more likely to have a miscarriage the older you are, i know over 40s havesomething like a 50% mc risk but i dont think its on a sliding scale before about 35.

I had my miscarriage a month after my 19th birthday. I then went on to have DS at 20 and am pg again at 22.

i was 19 then had ds when i was 25 think i had cysts but not sure if that was the cause was in bad relationship so was probably stress

Hi Jael

I am 22 and have recently had a M/C and ectopic pregnancy. I dont think it has much to do with age, i believe its just one of those things that happens for whatever reasons.

Heres to trying again.

justmee · 30/08/2008 09:54

1st m/c at 18 ...then again at 19...

tye · 01/09/2008 15:21

my first m/c was in april im 21. had a late misscarige with identical twins at 19weeks just found out im pg again and am terrified.

I had my first mc at 21, but didn't realise that's what it was til I had my second at 30, third at 32, fourth at 34, then finally dd arrived in one piece at 36! I think it depends on the individual, not just age. It'll either happen or it won't. Trying to gauge who's more likely to struggle is a bit like trying to figure who'll win the lottery. Most diagnosis on MC is as scientifically sound as most methods for picking lottery numbers too, from what I know on the subject!

Sorry to vaguely hijack, but so sorry to hear of your losses everyone, but especially tye and justmee. Tye, good luck with the new pg. It's natural to be scared...just take care of yourself as best you can and here's hoping it works out for you this time.

thankyou squilly.

tots2ten · 02/09/2008 14:53

jellybeans · 02/09/2008 14:57

I had my 1st mm/c at 18. My next pg was normal but I went on to have 4 losses and have had 3 normal pg's and am pg again.

giraffescantdancethetango · 02/09/2008 22:54

I have had 3 and I am 23 now.

Thanks for replying everyone, and sorry for all your losses. I'm now currently 5w and 4 days pregnant. But were not sure that it's holding on, due to an immense amount of pain. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though, still early days. Jael X
