Miscarriage at 11 weeks, baby stopped growing at 6 weeks

Hi,
I recently started bleeding at 11 weeks pregnant, went to the EPU the next day and was told that my baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks. I had the miscarriage that day, awful excruciating experience.

We would like to start trying again asap but I wonder if there’s anything I can do differently next time? Was there a reason why my body didn’t realise for 5 weeks?? Am I lacking in something or is this just one of those things? I have. 3 year old and had no issues with that pregnancy, I know that doesn’t make a difference but I think I’m just panicking!

thank you xx

Very similar happened to me. Found out at 11 weeks that baby had stopped growing at 7 weeks 6 days. I wasn't even bleeding but in the week before the D&C I did start bleeding slightly.

That was in December. The next December I had DD2!

It is unfortunately just one of those things. You didn't do anything wrong and there's nothing you could or should have done.

Thank you, it’s so difficult isn’t it, I was a nervous pregnant lady before but I can’t even imagine what I’ll be like (hopefully!) next time. I’m guessing you had a straightforward pregnancy with DD2? I’m just questioning everything now.

Don't really have any advice but didn't want to read and run, as similar happened with me.

I had an early scan at 8 weeks. Baby was only meausirng 6 weeks, but had a heartbeat so I was told not to worry. 4 weeks later, at nearly 12 weeks, I miscarried. It makes me wonder when exactly it died but I'll never know as I was never re-scanned.

I also have a 3 year old. I'm now in my first cycle trying again so I'm hoping the same won't happen again.

Very straightforward pregnancy (and birth) with DD2. (A lot more straightforward than DD1!)

Hi OP. I sadly have a similar story to you. I found out at a scan in January at nearly ten weeks that baby had stopped growing at seven weeks. I had no indication whatsoever. Although, like a pp, I had bleeding before my D&C.
It is sadly just one of those things. There is nothing you did or could have done. I read something really comforting on here that made me feel better. It said that your body just wanted the baby so much that it couldn't let go ❤️
I started trying again in March but my cycles were shorter and I was ovulating later. Cramps were also more painful. I ovulated earlier in April and am now 5+4 weeks pregnant. I think my cycles just needed time to settle. I am still very anxious and have had some spotting recently. There's nothing I can do but to wait it out and see.

Fingers crossed for you!! Do you think you’ll have early scans again? I had a muscle spasm in my back on the day I turned 6 weeks so I’m convinced that was either the cause or effect of my baby stopping growing but like you, I’ll never know! I wish I had an early scan. I’m so mad at my body for holding on for 5 whole weeks. 5 extra weeks of hopes and dreams!

Aww that is a nice thought! It’s so hard because yes we can try again but that baby was so wanted :( so unfair.
So happy for you, sending all the hope and love for your rainbow! 🌈

Aww OP, I’m sorry for your loss 💔
I lost my first baby, 10 years ago this September, I’ll never ever forget that baby.
I found out at 11+3 that baby stopped growing at 8 weeks. I had an early private scan at 8 weeks to hear heartbeat so it felt like I’d heard it for it just stop almost immediately.
I fell pregnant the following September (a year later) and I was petrified. I had only the two NHS scans. I didn’t accept I was pregnant until I was 21 weeks pregnant.
She’s now a crazy 7 year-old little girl and I’m now pregnant again with DD2.
There is often no rhyme or reason for why we lose a baby, it hurts so much never finding out why.
Allow yourself to heal, both mind and body 💛 x

Same for me, baby dued at 6 weeks found out at the scan at 12. What a bloody shock that was!! 18 months ago now x

SureLook · 30/05/2025 21:49

For what it's worth OP, I doubt your back spasm had anything to do with it. When I found out the doctor said it was most likely just a chromosomal abnormality that happened at the time of conception. Literally nothing could be done!

IceBlock · 30/05/2025 22:05

I had similar OP, went for a private scan at 10wks to find out I'd had a MMC - baby stopped growing at 6+5 but my body didn't realise. It all started the following day which was weird, but I'm glad I found out.

I have three older children and all was well with them and I'm now 33wks with our rainbow - and touch wood, all is fine -but it's been difficult to relax and enjoy it to the point I've bought absolutely nothing yet because "what if..." ❤️ It was nothing you or I did, it's just an awful thing that can happen but may also not.

Bohoboo · 31/05/2025 00:23

First pregnancy fine at 12 week scan then miscarried at 17 weeks. Likely stopped growing around 14 weeks. Was horrific as you can imagine. But became pregnant again 2 months later and DD is 18 in a month. Sometimes it's just one of those things unfortunately. I wish you all the best.

Howspieduh · 31/05/2025 07:12

@ViolettySpaghetti will definitely opt for an early scan again. It helped me prepare myself that I might lose the pregnancy. I knew when I ovulated and concieved so it was likely I'd lose it measuring 2 weeks behind😔 if I'd not had a scan I'd have been oblivious until I was nearly 12 weeks!

ViolettySpaghetti · 31/05/2025 08:04

Thank you so much everyone. Sorry for everyone’s loses :( fingers crossed for our rainbows!! 🌈

I was in a similar boat in January too. We went for a private scan just before Xmas which was showing the pregnancy 1.5w behind. Never got as far as a heart beat. I didn’t start miscarriaging for a good month or so afterwards.

My body did what it was meant to do. Built a little nest but the chick didn’t hatch.

The way I see it as that I’m thankful that mother nature did its thing. The baby would not had been healthy, it wasn’t compatible at life. It wasn’t down to me, or DH, it’s just one of those things that happen. It’s actually really common and that’s why traditionally people waited until 12 weeks to tell others.

You can make a healthy baby as you’ve done it before. Good luck ☘️

I am so sorry for your loss, I have been through it twice now, both MMCs at around 8 weeks. It is more than likely that it was a one off in your case, I think it's something like 90% of women who miscarry have a healthy baby next time. I'm now under the care of a miscarriage clinic and they gave me a list of supplements to take which I wish I'd known about the second time around. In case you're interested they were 2000mg vitamin D3, Omega3, 600mg coq10 and 75mg aspirin. I haven't started ttc again yet, so who knows if they help but I'm giving it a go anyway. Look after yourself, I'm wishing you all the best x

Thank you! I will give them a go, can’t hurt I suppose!
Sorry for your losses, I’m wishing you all the luck if and when you start to try again. ✨
