Heartbeat at 6 week, empty sac at 12 week

Hi mumsnetters
I had a fresh ivf cycle and got a BFP in December. It was my 2nd ivf cycle.
The ivf clinic confirmed fetal heartbeat at the early 6 week scan.
All was good until today, at the 12 week scan appointment where an empty gestational sac was seen measuring 14 mm.

  1. Has anyone experienced something like this, and knows what are the likely causes for this?
  2. has anyone got any advice for which option is the best for miscarriage management?
  3. what should be kept in mind before we try for a 3rd round with frozen embryosRegards

I’m so sorry this has happened to you. I had a missed miscarriage myself last August which was heartbreaking. I know it’s common, but it doesn’t make it any easier, especially when you’ve no reason to think anything is wrong.

I went for the surgery option as it was the quickest and most painless as well as being guaranteed to work. It was a a good option for me, but there are small risks which they’ll talk you through. Expectant management wasn’t for me as was told it could take weeks, but would have taken the tablets otherwise. In some cases they don’t work, and you need the D&C anyway.

Again, so sorry you’re going through this. It’s so hard, but does get easier in time.

Hi @Fletchasketch thanks for your message and sorry you had to go through somethint similar.
I proceeded with MVA today. It's painful and I am recovering physically. I believe the mental recovery takes a bit longer. Thanks for your reassuring message that it will get easier with time.
I too ruled out expectant management for it felt too prolonged and unexpected. Medicine management felt similar and not something that I could have dealt with anyway.
Thanks and hugs

It can’t have been easy, but glad to hear you’re recovering well. You’re right that the mental recovery takes longer. Sending love and hugs, look after yourself x
