MVA experience? Any successful pregnancies afterwards?

It’s been two weeks since my husband and I learned about our missed miscarriage. I’m now booked in for an MVA next week. From what I understand this is similar to a D&C but it’s a shorter procedure and you are kept awake under local anesthetic. I’m dreading it and would prefer to wait to miscarry naturally, but time is not on my side as my brother’s wedding is coming up.

I’m just wondering if anyone could share their MVA experience please.. it sounds like it will be quite painful? Does anyone have any positive stories of successful pregnancies after an MVA? I’ve read several stories of women getting pregnant after an MVA only to miscarry again.

Appreciate any input ❤️

Hello

I’m sorry for your loss. I had an MVA 2 years ago.
I did find it painful but it was contraction type pain for a few seconds at a time so it was manageable, and I didn’t need the gas and air that was available to get through it. The operation was also quite short, maybe 15mins. I believe some people don’t find it too painful though.
After the operation I had no pain or cramps at all and only a small amount of bleeding. The recovery was quick. I had some nausea (although that was probably specific to me, I don’t think it’s very common), and I had shivers from the tablets (known side effect). But I could leave the hospital pretty quickly and felt fine at home.
One thing I wasn’t aware of because they tell you it’s a short procedure and you’ll be in and out quickly - they gave me some drugs when I got there (I think misoprostol, codeine and paracetamol) and then I was told to go away for an hour and get some lunch whilst the drugs took effect, and then I had the procedure afterwards. So I was in hospital for a bit longer than expected but it wasn’t a problem.

My period returned 5 weeks after the operation and I got pregnant again 4 months after that and baby is now 1.

I hope all goes well for you
