9 weeks pregnant (IVF) - could this be miscarriage? TW blood pics

Hi everyone,

After an awful infertility journey, I’m finally 9 weeks pregnant. 2 days ago at 8+5 I had an abdominal scan and saw baby’s heartbeat, measuring perfectly etc. I was absolutely thrilled.
And now this. Just been to the toilet and on wiping saw blood, and then a brownish discharge (sorry if tmi) I’m on progesterone which I thought was supposed to prevent bleeding, so although there isn’t much blood, the fact I’ve bled through progesterone is really concerning me.
This was our one and only embryo after 3 rounds of IVF so I’m extremely anxious (probably anyone pregnant would be on seeing blood).
I’ve got an appointment with the midwife on Wednesday morning anyway, so don’t expect I’ll be able to do anything before then. But in the meantime I’d appreciate any thoughts or similar stories so I can prepare myself. Should I try calling the midwife tomorrow to see if she can get me booked in for a scan? Would they be likely to scan me at this stage?
I’m so so worried that our dream is coming to an end.

It doesn't look heavy so may not be anything to be concerned by. When I miscarried it was bright red, and that looks like old brown blood. It could also be that the scan dislodged some old blood. Definitely get checked out tomorrow just in case though. The fact you saw the heartbeat 2 days ago is promising.

It's brown and tiny amount, I'd take it as normal spotting.

HopefulElle · 06/05/2024 22:20

Thanks both for replying. @bradpittsbathwater my scan was abdominal, do you still think that could have had an impact or were you assuming vaginal?
@Potnoodlesarentantisocial I had heard of spotting but I thought progesterone was meant to stop that. I really hope you’re right though.

I had very similar in both my (ivf) pregnancies.

1st one was literally in the waiting room for a 9 week scan. Had had one at 7 weeks with the clinic, then booked private around 9 weeks. I'd been asked to drink water, but on arrival they changed it to an internal scan so I went to the toilet and had very similar to your picture. I was absolutely convinced for the rest of my wait that there'd be something wrong, but all was fine when they scanned. Never had any more bleeding.

With my 2nd, I had some bleeding like that around 8 weeks. It happened a few times over a few days and I called my gp who arranged for a scan for me. I think mentioning that it was an ivf pregnancy promoted her a bit more and she repeated that back to me a few times, as in, "and you're pregnant through ivf?" All was absolutely fine and any bleeding stopped shortly after.

Its a horrible horrible feeling. I hope all is OK for you

Had that sort of thing with all my pregnancies. There’s a lot going on in there don’t forget! That said if you’re stressing go for a scan.

HopefulElle · 06/05/2024 22:36

Thanks @HelloSunMyOldFriend - I was feeling so good after my scan and now just absolutely sick with worry. I wonder what it is about IVF? Maybe pessaries irritating cervix? Really great to hear both of yours were OK anyway, congratulations!

Thanks @Upinthenightagain, first pregnancy so not sure what’s normal tbh - I’ve spent so long obsessing over the getting pregnant part!

I’ll definitely ask the midwife if they will scan me

That looks very minimal. I had far more when MC - and also had far more and all was fine. Hang on in there, hope all works out ok

It’s hard. We associate any blood down there with not being pregnant but actually it is very common to get bits and bobs as things start bedding in so to speak. I had what looked like a full period when I was pregnant with my last. If I hadn’t tested and been trying I wouldn’t have suspected a thing.
I hope all is well for you.

HopefulElle · 07/05/2024 20:57

Thanks everyone. I’m booked in for a scan tomorrow morning so praying everything’s OK.

I had some spotting earlier today after a scan at 8 weeks and was absolutely beside myself, then reminded myself that I’d seen my baby’s little heart beating away just a hour before!

I’d also just been to the toilet, so put it down to being quite constipated and having to ‘exert myself’ a little more than I’m used to Blush

Fingers crossed for your scan tomorrow!

twohotwaterbottles · 07/05/2024 21:08

I had 9 rounds of ivf so totally understand how anxious literally everything makes you feel. Just wanted to say huge good luck and I hope everything is ok tomorrow. I'll keep you in my thoughts 🥰

Josette77 · 07/05/2024 21:10

When I lost my babies the blood was bright red and not a tiny amount.

I think you are probably good. ❤️

Congratulations!!!

bloodyBorat · 07/05/2024 21:10

Good luck OP, if it makes you feel better I spotted at around the same point of my IVF pregnancy and my DS is now 5. And I was abroad at my friend's wedding at the time, it was very stressful. But I think it's very common for a bit of old blood to dislodge (and that does look like old brown blood and not fresh bleeding). Mine was more than that and pinky red and everything turned out ok.I think they upped my progesterone for a bit after the bleed but they didn't seem overly concerned about it.

It's just such a rollercoaster and I really hope it all turns out alright, sending lots of positive vibes your way Flowers

MaybeBabyTwo · 07/05/2024 21:13

I've had three ivf pregnancies, one that was successful and two miscarriages. With my daughter, I had SO much bleeding, bright red and fresh and was convinced it was all over and she was absolutely fine. I also had lots of brown spotting that was fine as well! Are you doing the vaginal pessaries? They definitely irritated my cervix which is often a cause of brown blood. Best of luck for your scan tomorrow. X

bloodyBorat · 07/05/2024 21:13

And also to add, miscarriage before I started IVF was red right from the start and the bleeding got worse quite rapidly. I don't remember brown blood at all, it was like a period starting.

Latenightreader · 07/05/2024 21:25

I'm another person who had something similar. At 6 weeks I had a big bleed with red blood and was convinced I'd miscarried, but after a series of blood tests the clinic confirmed I was still pregnant. At 10 weeks I had something similar to you - brown blood. I had my booking in appointment that afternoon so they sent me for a scan and confirmed all well. I was on progesterone at the time (injections not pessaries). My daughter is now five and a half.

Hope you get reassurance soon. It is all horribly stressful, isn't it.

Retailchick · 07/05/2024 21:35

Good luck with your scan tomorrow - it’s such a worrying time… look up subchorionic haematoma- this can some times cause a bleed and isn’t always picked up on ultrasound. I had this with my first IVF pregnancy which resulted in our healthy now 2.5 year old boy and had bleeding around 8, 11 and 13 weeks and took progesterone til 10 weeks. Brown blood usually = old so fingers crossed for your appointment tomorrow

HopefulElle · 08/05/2024 12:12

Hi everyone, thank you for all of your reassuring replies and so sorry to hear so many of you have been through losses and/or IVF.
I’ve just had my scan and everything is completely fine, baby was wriggling around and heartbeat strong, no sign of a haematoma or any other reason for the bleed. I cried! X
