How long did you get positive test after miscarriage at 6 weeks?

Hi all,

yesterday I would have been 6 weeks. After a couple of days feeling pretty unwell with flu-like body aches I had some brown spotting in the morning. I didn’t panic straight away as had some bleeding with my first pregnancy and all was fine. When I got to work I started feeling pretty rough, very faint and weak and more bleeding which was red blood now and cramping. I went home and the cramping got worse and bleeding continued through the day night. Not super heavy but just steady like a period. Didn’t notice any big clots but there was a few stringy bits, again similar to a period.

I assumed this was a miscarriage and called my fertility clinic to let them know but was surprised when the nurse told me this is actually common (heavy bleeding and cramping) in early pregnancy and to take another test in the morning, as at this early stage the HCG hormones leave your system pretty quickly if the pregnancy has ended.

This morning I took a test and it came back positive straight away. I am still bleeding a bit and feel very weak but no more cramping today.
The fertility nurse called to check in and advised taking another test in a few days, as they really can’t know for sure at this stage since apparently some people do have these symptoms and their pregnancies continue. I find it really hard to believe there is a possibility I could still be pregnant, what other explanation could there be? I’m trying to be realistic about it, and would really just like to know for certain so I can process this and move on. So really just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences, and how long did it take to get a negative test after an early miscarriage?

thanks in advance.

Sorry for your loss op. I was still testing positive after a mmc 7 weeks later 😪

Thanks @TellySavalashairbrush. Sorry for yours as well. Can I ask how far along you were when you miscarried?

A good friend of mine had bleeding like that with all three of her successful pregnancies. It’s got to be unusual, granted, but if you’re still testing positive it’s hard to know for sure at the stage as it could still be fine.

I’ve been in a similar position and wasn’t so lucky, and I know the waiting and not-knowing is agony. Wishing you all the best x

Miscarried at 8 weeks, positive tests for a further 3 weeks. Was told it would be 2-3 weeks before my hormones were back to normal, modern tests are very sensitive.

Multiple miscarriages around the same duration it takes 1-2 weeks for a negative test in my
experience. Definitely lighter tests after 3/4 days.

@Rosie86947 hi, sorry you’re going through this, I had exactly the same this past month where the EPU told me everything was fine but I knew it was a loss and after weeks of blood tests, scans etc it’s finally confirmed but been a slow process.
I was 6.5 weeks when I started spotting, after a week this became more like a period and with constant cramping for about two weeks…. Didn’t pass anything very big but quite a few smalls pieces passed.
i had a strong dark line on home tests for ages but have finally started getting faint ones now (see pic).
For reference I started spotting 2nd April (6.5 weeks) and stopped bleeding 14th April but I only started to have a faint line a couple days ago (2 weeks after bleeding had stopped). I know a lot of people have it drop really quick but everyone’s different, seen lots of people say they tested positive for about 10 weeks!

HCG blood tests were:
16th April : 1375
18th April : 1067
24th April : 495
Now given up getting anymore as been tracking with home tests…

sending you love and support! And questions feel free to ask! 🩷 xx

How long did you get positive test after miscarriage at 6 weeks?
Frostfable · 02/05/2024 18:08

I’ve had a couple of miscarriages with very high hcg levels.
i test positive with a strong positive up until my period about six weeks after my mc x

LER2023 · 02/05/2024 19:14

Im really sorry for your loss. Ive had 3 miscarriages around the 6 week mark, first was 6+1, second was 5+6 and 3rd was 6+2.

I began testing negative 2/3 weeks post miscarriage.

Not too sure where the nurse got next day from, as hcg does still linger, it just gets lower and lower as your body begins to process your loss.
The testing day after day to see a positive will still give false hope (to me anyway)
Try again in a week or so and see if your tests change😊

Thanks all for your replies and sorry we’ve all been through this. I was definitely surprised when she said to take a test the next day, and everything I’ve heard suggests a positive test would likely continue for some time.

This afternoon I passed some thicker tissue and what I think was the sac (white/greyish). So now I’m 100% sure it was a miscarriage. As sad as it is I actually feel better now knowing one way or the other.

is there any medical reason to keep testing other than to make sure the pregnancy has finished? Thanks

You need to know the full pregnancy tissue has come away so you have to test 2 weeks from now and check it’s negative. If it’s not get back in contact it’s epau as they might want to scan you. It’s the risk of infection with remaining tissue I believe. On occasions if it’s not all passed they might want to do a d&c
