Pregnancy tests negative then positive again 3 weeks after miscarriage

I’m looking for someone who’s had a similar experience as I’m very confused as to what’s going on in my body after a recent miscarriage, and it’s doing my head in. 

3 weeks ago I had a miscarriage at 5.5 weeks. Bleeding started and then my pregnancy tests got fainter, lost symptoms etc. Contacted local EPU and they told me to test once a week to check my hcg levels drop and if I’m still positive at 3 weeks to call them. I tested after my bleeding stopped and it was negative. I was sad but also found it helpful to know the physical part was over and now it was time to heal emotionally.

For some reason I woke up yesterday convinced I was pregnant (no idea why, no symptoms, just going a little crazy), did a test and it was positive. Looking back at dates I don’t think it’s actually possible to be a new pregnancy, and incomplete miscarriage seems a lot more likely. Phoned EPU this morning as was hoping they would scan me to check for tissue but they’ve said wait another week and then test. I just really want this miscarriage to be over so I can heal emotionally. Has anyone had tests go negative then positive after a miscarriage? What was going on? 

Timeline for clarity: 

3/3: Light bleeding starts - on and off at first 
6/3: Pregnancy tests go faint
7/3: Bleeding gets heavy and lose pregnancy symptoms 
13/3: Bleeding stops 
16/3: Negative pregnancy test and start having sex again
24/3: Positive pregnancy test (faint but clear)

Hey - I do agree if you only started having sex on 16th this is very unlikely to be a new pregnancy unless you happened to ovulate that exact day, conceived, and implanted 8 days later. Did you track ovulation at all?

The other possibility is that HCG is rising again as it was a pregnancy of unknown location... If you get any other symptoms such as pain/ bleeding etc then I'd push to be seen. Otherwise retest in a week like they say!

Thanks for your reply @ThelastRolo20. No annoyingly I didn’t track ovulation. I did have EWCM around the 16th, but don’t think I have ovulated as I don’t feel like I’m in the second half of my cycle now - no sore boobs etc.

You’re right, I’ve just got to wait. I kinda knew that was the answer, but it doesn’t make it any easier!

@TTCbb1 it could very well be a new pregnancy , the time between the sex and positive seems quite short yes, only 8 days but it’s possible ! I don’t see how can the test go from negative to positive any other way unless it’s new pregnancy ? People go get positive faints at 8dpo but rare . Plus you must of ovulated straight after bleeding stopped . Xx good luck

this happened to a friend of mine and it was a new pregnancy she was pregnant again. You can ovulate 2 weeks after having a miscarriage, good luck. X

Thanks for your replies and wishes of good luck. I’m not sure what to think. I did another test this morning as I was hoping line progression either way might give me a clue, but the test looks exactly the same as the one I did on Sunday

Sharing an update in case anyone is in a similar situation and finds this thread. Scan yesterday confirmed it’s a new pregnancy! Based on the scan and when I had EWCM, it seems very likely the conception was 3 days after my miscarriage bleeding ended. It’s been a bit of a shock as everything I’ve been reading online says earliest ovulation is 2 weeks after miscarriage, but it obviously is possible to ovulate a lot quicker.

I got pg 1 week after a mmc and surgical intervention after sex just once so it can happen. It was all a bit of a shock but turned out ok in the end

Hi can any one offer any advice here as i feel like i’m going out of my mind!!! I’m 28 and started trying for a baby with my husband in Jan 2024 (after coming off pill) didn’t have a period for 8 weeks and was pregnancy testing every week which was BFN’s! However 27th feb BFP we were ecstatic and didn’t think it would happen so quickly, however at 5w3d i had miscarriage :-( (7th march) bleeding lasted until 15th March. Negative test 22/03 so we’ve been DTD since then, its been five weeks on Thursday since MC started and still no period. I’ve had mild cramping, sore breasts and headache and felt a little nauseous (the same symptoms as i had last time before BFP) I’ve done three tests and BFN :-( dont know if its my period coming (never had periods for years as was on depo injection and pill so cant remember what they really feel like) do you think it may be too early to test or is it game over for this month? Was going to wait until after first AF to try again but just feel so desperate after the loss, i want my baby

I’m so sorry about your miscarriage @Cb75, it’s such a tough thing to go through. And it really messes with your head when you don’t know what’s going on in your body! I also haven’t had a normal cycle since getting my Mirena removed so would struggle to tell the difference between pregnancy and pre-period symptoms. I don’t think you’re out until AF shows. Keeping my fingers crossed for you x

Tested again today and that was another negative, my boobs are so sore and keep getting back pain and cramps, feel like my body is being cruel and playing tricks on me :-(
