So many questions about my miscarriage… How long will I bleed for? When can we try again?

Miscarriage began at 5+4 with pink spotting and then took 24 hours to progress into cramps and bright red bleeding and clots.

I know I was very early but it still feels so sad and shocking, you never think it will be you until it is.

We want to try again as soon as the bleeding has stopped. I asked EPU and they were condescending towards me about this, saying I must wait for at least one period to have arrived before trying. I don’t want to, I just want to be pregnant. Their tone made me more upset and I left with more questions than I have answers for, so I am turning to here.

  • Please can anyone share how long your bleeding lasted at a similar gestation?
  • At this early stage, could it have been a chemical that just took a while to bleed?
  • How long did it take for you to test negative? I have already done a Clearblue which thinks 1-2. It said 2-3 10 days ago, so clearly my levels have dropped or are dropping.
  • Can we try again this cycle?

Thank you so much to anyone who can help. I’m so sorry you’ve experienced this too.

Hey, I had a miscarriage at around the same time, I think it was a chemical pregnancy. I started spotting one evening then the next day around lunchtime I had bright red blood that tailed off throughout the day then the following day another bigger bleed which then tailed off after about a week
I tested negative on a strip test about 1.5-2weeks later. It was a cheap one so I don’t know if a more sensitive test would have picked anything up still at that point.
I had an appt booked at epu anyway because of the bleeding, I still attended it (as I did ask if I could still go even though I was quite sure what was happening) and they said it’s absolutely fine to try again immediately, it can just make it slightly harder to know dates if you haven’t had a period in between, but you’ll have a rough idea and they can date you with at your scan anyway. If it helps, they also seemed a bit miffed that I’d come anyway and asked them, they just wanted to get me out the room and see the next person and almost seemed annoyed that I was there.
I’m sorry you’re going through this and really sorry that you haven’t been treated well by EPU.
best of luck 😊 x

I'm sorry for your loss.

I had a couple of fairly early losses, but both were different in terms of how long I bled for - one was lighter, for longer; the other it was pretty much just like a normal period. So, I'm not sure there's any way to know. Same with how long it would take for your hormone levels to drop.

You can conceive again immediately and don't need to wait until your next cycle. It might make it hard to date any pregnancy, but if you do ovulation tests that should help narrow it down.

Wishing you all the best 💐

I just had a MMC and had surgery yesterday. Consultant advised waiting a couple of cycles to try again but I'm not sure how I feel about that. The nurse said one but purely for dating reasons which seems really trivial to me as I'm sure it could be figured out.
Sorry to hear about your loss x

Thank you all. I will be doing ovulation tests. I’m just so terrified it’s going to happen again. I’m only 22 so really wasn’t expecting it to be me as the stats are under 10% at my age. Frightened this means me or DH carries some kind of genetic condition we don’t know about. Irrational right? I know it’s just nature.

@lkjhuytiop if it helps, the consultant said that it is likely a chromosome issue and it's sporadic. So it's unlikely to happen again but I share the same fear. I do have a child already which I think is why it's maybe felt like more of a shock as everything was fine with him. I'm sure when you try again it'll work out 🩷
