Missed miscarriage anembryonic pregnancy /Blighted ovum 13 weeks, no bleeding

Yesterday I had my dating scan only to find an empty sac, there was no baby at all... It was quite a shock as I've been having pregnancy symptoms thus far. Apparently this is called a blighted ovum or an anembryonic pregnancy and it happens when a fertilised egg never develops into an embryo but the body carries on with the pregnancy. I'm approximately 13 weeks but I haven't had any bleeding or passing of tissue yet. I tried to contact the midwives all morning to no use, it just seems impossible to get someone on the phone to speak to... Am I likely to miscarry and bleed naturally? Did anyone had a blighted ovum for this long before bleeding?

Hiya I was in the same boat as you and I didn't bleed or pass the tissue until week 15 it took a while for my body to catch up to the fact I wasn't actually pregnant. The wait was horrible they offered me medication after the 12 week mark to get it started but said I would need to stay in the hospital to make sure everything went OK and I didn't bleed to much and I decided not to go for that as I wanted to be at home. I dealt with my early pregnancy unit and they were brilliant with me. I'm so sorry to hear your going through this it's so tough.

So sorry 😔 I had the same, it never went past 5 weeks. I opted for surgical management at 8.5 weeks, it was the right decision for me, I was home the same day afterwards and it helped me to move on. Sharing in case this is something you’d consider.

Yes. I was more than 16 weeks when it came away. A lot of bleeding, labour pains and my milk came in. There was just a small blood clot in the sac.

Thanks for your replies and I'm deeply sorry for your losses 💐, finally I was able to get through EPU but the hospital refuses to do further testing/treatment because the scan report says that there wasn't a pregnancy. At the scan the sonographer just told me that there wasn't a baby that could be seen and to contact EPU/CM for further action. At the scan I could see a pitch black circle in my uterus, isn't that fluid? Just like my bladder was all black as it was full. My midwife is on leave atm otherwise I'd have spoken to her... Anyway it just seems there isn't much I can do other than wait for nature to take its course and to keep an eye for signs of an infection, I'm getting a few cramps so I'm hoping I won't need medical intervention

That sounds rubbish, I’m so sorry that the hospital isn’t more supportive. They really should discuss your options for management…I would persist, if you can, but you really shouldn’t be in this situation on top of everything else 💐Maybe you can speak to your midwife when she’s back?
