Why can't I get Pregnant After Miscarriage?

Hello,

I have a 3 year old son, and I miscarried a subsequent pregnancy last May. I had no idea there was a problem, until I had my 12 week scan, and having been clutching my scan photo money, was told that the baby had died. I opted for a small proceedure, as I couldn't bear the thought of just waiting to bleed. I haven't been back on the pill since, so wondering why I'm having no luck conceiving. Has anyone any ideas?

what does your GP say? sounds like it's been long enough for the medics to start looking into it?

Hi AAL, sorry about your mc. unfortunately nobody reacts to mc the same, most gps wont start investigations until you have been ttc for at least a year, or have had 3 or more mcs. however it may be worth just going in for a chat.

Hi AAL - I too have the same problem ! Conceived my 3 year old dd no problem and then conceived a second time no problem. M/c July 06 and haven't been able to conceive since.

Have finally been referred to hospital - first appointment mid April.

Go to your doctors and they might run some initial tests. I m/c in the July and they started running initial blood tests last March/April time but we had to wait to be referred.

Thanx, did that. I think it's a year until they investigate. Was told it could b that I'm worrying, but how do I stop? It's a vicious circle

When I was referred it was discovered I wasn't ovulating properly, despite there definitely being no problem with conception prior to mc.

Specialist told me that mc can send all hormones into a tailspin. I was put on a very low dose of clomid, and conceived dd almost straight away. I have to say I was only trying about 6 months before referral. I saw gp who wasn't interested at first, but as I knew I was usually very fertile I knew something was wrong, so I went back nd asked for a referral I also paid to go private as age wasn't on my side!

I found that when I had a ERPC after a miscarriage it took me ages to get pregnant again too. I felt that the ERPC had perhaps taken away some of the lining of the womb, which needed quite a few months to build up again to a level where it could support a pregnancy. I based this feeling (and I must stress that a feeling is all it is) on the way my periods were after the m/c, very thin watery blood.

I got pg again after nearly a year and promptly lost that one too. But this time it all came away and I was told I didn't need an ERPC - I got pg the next month and that one stuck.

As I say, I have no idea whether I am right or not, it is just the way I interpreted what had happened to me. And I would stress that if you are advised you should have an ERPC then you obviously need one and shouldn't refuse it.

Hi, just to add my periods didnt get back to normal after a mc and so after my second mc I also got low dose clomid which they said was to try and regulate my periods. I was 35 at the time and they said that over 35 they treated fertility problems slightly differently.

Yes, my periods were very different as well. Much closer together and very heavy for first day, and then nothing. Perhaps this is a symptom that something has changed, because after pg they have returned to normal again....

Well I conceived in the next cycle but it didn't hang around - I think my uterus was too thin after the scraping. We tried again twice over the next year and a half, sounds funny but we had lots going on and weren't sure of the timing so we used condoms most of the time. When the time came to try again properly we conceived on the 3rd month. I do think stress and that 'I must conceive' feeling just makes it not happen! But I don't know what advice to give you. i guess I'm saying that bodies are funny. You can conceive without thinking about it or you can wait ages...I don't know whether the m/c even caused the delay for us, who knows? Keep at it and you will get there! If you dn't conceive by May they will have a look at you both. xxx

I don't have any children at the moment. I've been married for 1 year 5 months now. we started after 10 month ttc.

I got pregnant after trying with 3 months. I took the test early using an advanced pregnancy test (clear blue) and got a positive test. I kept testing for 3 days in a raw with a positive test using other pregnancy test kinds, after 4 days from testing I'd a mc and doctors said it was a chemical pregancy and if I didn't tested early I wouldn't know that I was pregnant.

I was so happy when we knew it was positive and told everyone and then got heart broken when we lost it.

I'm 26 years old now, I've been trying to get pregnant after my first mc for 4 months now with nothing. (we used ovulation test, mucas test ... etc) and nothing seems to be working and getting pregant is taking for ever.

Please tell me if i have to see a doctor now or should I wait and try more. any one had the same story and got pregnant after a chemical pregnancy and mc?

dear aal, the same happened to me on the 20th may 2010 i mc twins and only found at at the scan, 2 years on i have had the all clear from the hospital we have both had test and the only thing they can put it down to is my weight and my age my periods are 28/29 day every month with the twins it took 6 weeks to conceive i am running out of time, i even use the clear blue fertillity monitor, but what i wanted to say is dont give up hunny i am just getting on with my normal day to day life i have 2 teenagers and so least i have them but i would love to have a baby with my partner so he knows what it is like to be a daddy. i still live in hope that is will happen and i hope evereyone on here does as well xx

jessica 4 months TTC is nothing to worry about. At your age you have plenty of time. TTC does take time, its far more complex than just getting the timing right. I had a MC when i was in my early 20s, it took me several months to get pregnant again. Just try to relax a bit. At your age its very unlikely the GP will do anything for another few months unless there are obvious problems with your periods.

Just wanted to say, same is happening with me. Took 3 months to conceive DD, 4 months to get pg last year. MC in July and now it's been 10 months TTCing and no success. My mc was natural so not to do with EPRC. I'm 35 and just started testing. Possible that I'm not ovulating but hard to tell yet. It's a stressful time. Today I saw a woman I knew had mcd at the same time as me, clearly pg. Just gutting.

I mc'd last May at 8 weeks, and had another one last November. I'm now 6 weeks pregnant but had to go to the docs this morning because of bleeding over the weekend. I had a chat with the practice midwife and she recommended upping the amount of B vitamins you take because these are often quite low after giving birth, or having an mc. She also said Omega 3 is important to make the bean stick.
She advised us to take multi vitamins and then wait for 3 months before ttc again should this pregnancy end in an mc. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we won't have to do that and am eating multi vitamins like there's no tomorrow! The ones she recommended were Orthomol - they're quite expensive though and I'm sure there are other ones around that do the same job.

Similar story here. DD aged 2.4, then BFP at new year after 5 months TTC. MMC and ERPC In Feb. Started TTC again after post-op bleeding stopped, but bit concerned as had v little bleeding after ERPC and also two periods since have been really light, like barely enough to go onto a pad. Not sure what it all means.

It's very difficult when you seem to hear everywhere that you're more fertile after a MC. It took us exactly a year to get pregnant again and, like you, I thought it would never happen. We did have some investigations but we're lucky enough not to have to go through much of the process. It turned out DH's sperm is not as great quality as we might have hoped, but we got there in the end without intervention. I hope you do too. Hugs.
