Strong positive on pregnancy test 11 days after D&C

Morning,

I had a D&C 11 days ago for a missed miscarriage (baby measured 7+3 when I should have been 10 weeks). I had bright red bleeding for about a week with a few blood clots but that's now stopped and i just have a little bit of brown spotting. EPU told me to wait 3 weeks before doing a pregnancy test but I did one this morning just to check how things were going (which I now regret doing!). The test is a really strong positive on a FRER (test line as dark as control line) and now I'm really worried that I might have retained tissue.

Has anyone else had this and then had a negative by 3 weeks? Or is it a bad sign? I wish I hadn't done the test now and just waited as I've worried myself!

Thanks!

Hiya, all I would say is I'm now two weeks post surgery and I have definite negatives on every other test apart from a FRER - I've seen some people say they had bfps on them for up to 9 weeks! So I've stopped using them and just use the regular ones. The hospital gave me a test and I'm negative on that one as well as other cheapies. I think they're just so sensitive. Maybe try a regular test at some point and see where you're at?x

Thanks @Enigma85, that's useful to know. I think what's concerning me the most is how strong the test is. The test line is so dark, I was expecting to see a faint line by this stage, which makes me worry that there is retained tissue. And I've stopped bleeding so concerning it won't come out by itself.. really don't want another D&C!

This is why they tell you to take a test on 3 weeks!

Statistically it's most likely you don't have retained tissue.

Was the D&C performed using ultrasound scan?

I am sorry for your loss
When this happened to me it was a new pregnancy

Enigma85 · 15/01/2023 10:28

@tttc2022 I think 7 days after using an FRER which are highly sensitive is too early to worry. There could be retained tissue but I don't think that test is necessarily an indication of it, and like someone else said, that's why they say wait 3 weeks. I would do a regular test and then again in a week and see how much it's reduced. And honestly mine will be 3 weeks this Thursday and I'm only now seeing a faint line on FRER. I know it's so worrying, I worried when I had bleeding on and off for 2 weeks but all gone now, a week after is very early still x

Sorry just realised you're 11 days after D&C and not 7, I'm 17 now and got a faint line, after 2 weeks mine was still strong on FRER so I still reckon ignoring the FRERs for a bit and doing some others, or testing again in a week and I'm sure it would've got fainter xx

tttc2022 · 15/01/2023 10:40

Thanks everyone, I'm really kicking myself for doing the test as it's only caused worry!
@Whataretheodds I agree, I won't test again now until I'm 3 weeks post op. No, I wasn't scanned.
@Enigma85 that's really helpful to know that yours were strong 2 weeks post op. Which tests are less sensitive than FRER? Are the easy at home ones?

Frers are sensitive. I think it did take the full three weeks before mine went to negative. I wouldn’t worry just yet.

tttc2022 · 02/02/2023 07:03

Hi all, I'm now 4 weeks post D&C and still getting a faint line on a FRER. I did have a scan as part of private investigations that I'm having done and they couldn't see any retained tissue on this so could it just be that my HCG levels are taking a while to come down? No hint of ovulation or AF yet!

Evening All.

I know this is post was from last month but I'm hoping someone will see my message who has been through something similar.

So 5 weeks ago I had to have a D&C after having a major haemorrhage due to an early miscarriage. Doctor told me to take a pregnancy test 2 weeks later which I did, I took one on the 31st Jan and another on the 4th Feb, both of which were clear negatives.

Today I've taken a FRER which is a strong positive (photo attached) and a digital clear blue which is saying 1-2 weeks.

Has anyone experienced having negative tests after a D&C and positives weeks later?

Hey
Im so sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately I also suffered a massive haemorrhage on the 16th Jan I initially thought I’d be able to pass the pregnancy tissue naturally but my body wasn’t able to 😞 I went on to have a D&C on 17th Jan. I tested today as it had been 3 weeks and it’s showing a faint positive line, it’s naturally triggered my anxiety and thankfully EPAU have booked me in so I’m hoping they can advice further. I’d Advice you speak to your midwife so they can carry out any bloods or scans necessary.

good luck xx

Hi
thank you so much for your message and sharing your story. I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve gone through the same. This happened to me last year and it was a new pregnancy, it was a twin pregnancy. We unfortunately lost one at 8 weeks, but I thank my lucky stars everyday that the other one stayed with me and we now have a beautiful, healthy baby girl that was born in October.
I really hope you get your happy ending to your story too! Xx

BusyBod123 · 07/02/2024 07:44

Heyy

Awww honestly I thought the same when I saw your message initially but didn’t want to be insensitive just incase it wasn’t a new pregnancy! I’m sorry for the loss of one of your twins and congratulations on your beautiful baby girl. I didn’t realise the post was from last year 🥹 I’m hoping I’m clear of any pregnancy materials so I can recover. Tc xxxx
