No heartbeat at 7-8 weeks - vaginal scan

For the past couple days I have had some bleeding and last night I passed what looked very much like a foetus. I had a vaginal scan this morning and was shocked when they told me that I still had a pregnancy inside me, meaning what I passed last night was either not a foetus, or it was a twins and so far I’ve lost one. I know what I saw last night so am convinced it was twins. They told me that they couldn’t detect a heartbeat of the pregnancy inside me, this could either mean that this one has also died, or that it’s too young to detect the heartbeat yet. They’ve dated me 9 weeks pregnant based on my last period, but I know I’m more likely to be around 7-8 weeks. I have another scan next week to confirm whether the baby inside me has grown or has also died.

I thought that at 7-8 weeks this is still old enough to detect a heartbeat using the vaginal scan method? They kept asking me the first date I did a positive pregnancy test, which was just over 6 weeks ago. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Could this pregnancy still be viable if there is no heartbeat detected on the vaginal scan at 7-8 weeks? I’m not sure whether to hold out hope or start trying to accept the loss.
