Chances of retained product passing naturally?

I had medical management four weeks ago after being told at our 12 week scan our baby had no heartbeat and had stopped growing the week before.

Last week I went to EPAU because I’m still bleeding and testing positive. They scanned me and told me I had retained product measuring around 12mm.

Any experiences of this would be greatly appreciated? I really want to avoid any intervention so am interested in whether anyone passed retained product naturally? They told me medical management would likely not work but I really want to avoid the surgery (I think I have a bit of a phobia, even the thought makes me a bit panicky)

Thanks so much

Hi I thought I'd share my experience although it's not what you want to hear maybe...I had retained pregnancy tissue following my MC@ 10 weeks. MC was natural and pregnancy tissue was still there 3 weeks after, no bleeding, no pain but pregnancy test was not fading. It's been nearly 2 weeks post surgery and I amost have a negative test! Finally!!

I'm sorry for your loss. After my 4th loss, I had symptoms of retained tissue but had negative tests so the epu had discharged me. My GP prescribed antibiotics and 3 days after finishing them, I passed some pregnancy tissue and then my period started - it was 45 days after I passed my pregnancy. So it might be worth speaking to your GP, best wishes x

Thank you both for sharing you stories and I’m sorry for your losses 💐

@VenusStarr if you don’t mind me asking, how did you know it was pregnant tissue? I have passed a few clots but I think they are more just bloody clots. Will I know when I have passed the tissue?

Sorry if this is a bit graphic @Elsie2021 but the tissue was grey and had a different texture to clots. Because I've had 4 losses and I took my last one for testing, we knew what we were looking for as we'd seen the pregnancy sac and placenta x

Hi there - I had retained tissue after an MVA following a MMC. Sadly for me I had to have another MVA as the retained tissue had a blood supply and wouldn’t come out on its own. Sounds like your situation is different though and the doctor I spoke to said if it’s a small bit of tissue and not adhered to the walls of the uterus it should come away in your next period. Good luck!

Just thought I would follow this up for anyone that finds this thread in the future.

I went back for my scan today and they said everything has gone! So thankfully it did all pass naturally.

Still testing positive currently (and bleeding!) but hopefully that will all stop soon.

Hey @Elsie2021 Sorry for your loss and I hope you are ok. I put a post up asking similar this morning (before finding this thread)
I had medical management last year and knew it worked as I passed a lot of blood and even saw the baby 😢 I bled for 7 weeks after though.

I also had medical management yesterday and haven’t passed a lot yet, wondering how long to leave it til I call EPU. Did they tell you to call back in 4 weeks or did you decide to call them since you still had positive tests?

Elsie2021 · 08/05/2021 20:44

They told me to test after 3 weeks and call them if it was positive.

However I had my medical management in hospital and they told me I had passed the pregnancy and placenta, however something obviously still remained.

If you were sent home to manage yourself and it hasn’t really started yet, then if I was you I would be ringing them? They are there to help so no need to suffer on your own 🙂

Hiya did the retained product having blood supply cause any issues during the D&C?

Hipww · 22/11/2023 14:33

Hiya did you have any issues with it having blood supply

Hipww · 28/12/2023 09:51

Hiya I’ve heard they can still come out with blood supply what’s a mya x

Hipww · 30/12/2023 10:56

@Norberta hiya did you bleed much with it having blood supply

Norberta · 31/12/2023 06:59

@Hipww i did lose a fair bit of blood in the first procedure and was very faint afterwards but only for a short time. I had to have it a second time as it wasn’t completely successful the first time and the second time was very straight forward and I’ve had no ongoing issues. Sending love,
you’ll be ok. I’m currently sitting on the sofa while my now one year old tears around the living room at 7am so i went on to have a successful pregnancy and it all worked out in the end xxxx

Hipww · 31/12/2023 08:06

@Norberta which procedure had the blood supply one? Was you awake when they did it? How much blood did you loose? And what symptoms did you have of it being there ?

Hipww · 31/12/2023 09:07

@Norberta mine had blood supply to it too, I’ve had 2 heavy bleeds and clots so I’m hoping it passed it myself , did you ever pass clots? I’m so scared they will say it’s still there, did you bleed a lot during the blood supply surgery one? Was you also put to sleep?
