Day 1 of period, possible miscarriage or uterine shedding?

Hi everyone, this is my first time using mumsnet and would appreciate any help or advice! Today I started my period with a pink light discharge that turned into brown blood. Around dinner time I felt a bit wet down there and when I went to the toilet I found a huge clot and got scared. It looks quite dark and grey in places/there's some tissue? Right after I passed the clot the bleeding has been light and I have had normal period cramps all day. I am currently on the pill and my husband and I aren't trying for a little one yet, but when I thought it might be a miscarriage my heart sank. Please let me know what you think xx

Also I'm not sure how to upload pictures onto mumsnet, anyone know how? X

I've had similar many years ago. There was no explanation at the time but I did a couple of tests which were negative. Do try taking a test.

It could just be a clot. I frequently had similar as a young teen, before I was sexually active. Haven't had anything similar for a least a decade, but just wanted to reassure you that it really doesn't necessarily indicate a miscarriage.

Thank you for your response x I will get a test tomorrow and see. Hoping its just uterine shedding.

@spacepoppers thank you x this is the first time I've ever had something like this and I've been on the pill for many years and the implant at one point. What's reassuring me is that I haven't had severe cramping, but I've read that it can come later.

That is exactly the sort of thing I used to see, and it was never a miscarriage. As a collection of cells it can never be 100% ruled out, but it definitely shouldn't be your first thought. Trust me, our bodies can expel all sorts of weird crap - and as a midwife I don't say that lightly!

The first time this happened to me it scared the life out of me! It was greyish coloured and thick looking tissue, I was convinced I’d had a miscarriage. But I’ve had the same thing several times since then so it must’ve just been some uterine shedding. I have also had miscarriages and they actually weren’t the same at all. Early miscarriages there was barely any tissue at all and later ones are quite identifiable.

Haha thank you that makes me feel much better! I really do appreciate the feedback x Finally feel like I can go to sleep now!

@JKRisagryff thank you for sharing your experiences x I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriages. If you don't mind me asking, are you still trying for a little one? Even though I am currently on the pill, I've been feeling a bit broody these last few months! My husband and want to enjoy just us for a bit before we venture into the wonderful world of parenthood! X
