Tfmr at 16 weeks - did you have a curettage afterwards?

I am in hospital (not in the UK) for a termination due to Edwards syndrome. I have been told I will need a curettage after giving birth, even if there is no sign of parts of the placenta being retained, because at 16 weeks gestational age many women end up needing a D&C anyway after a few weeks due to persistent bleeding. Is this general practice? I'd like to avoid an unnecessary operation and am also worried about future fertility problems. Any experience and advice would be appreciated!

Hi. I’m sorry for your loss. I am also not in the UK but it is certainly not standard practice where I am (our practice is very similar to the UK and we follow a lot of UK guidelines). Yes there is a risk of retained products, and the chance of retained placenta at the time of delivery is around 25-30% so you may need D&C anyway. But if all goes well with delivery of baby and placenta I would be inclined to refuse any extra treatment.

Thanks for your reply, I didn't need a D&C in the end.
