First period after miscarriage at 5/6 weeks... How long did it take you?

Hello everyone,

I miscarried at 5/6 weeks about 8 weeks ago. I'm sure my period is due any day now but just wondering for piece of mind, I wasn't expecting it to take so long because I was so early on in my pregnancy? What was your experience? I was expecting it to arrive at 4 - 6 weeks after.

It was confirmed by an internal scan that my body looked after itself 8 weeks ago.

Is it crazy that sometimes I think I might still be pregnant? I will probably be hit with all the emotions all over again when it arrives. This self isolation business is also heightening all my feelings :(

Thanks,
Rachel

Hi Rachel. So sorry for your loss.
I miscarried about 6 weeks ago and last day of bleeding was 5 weeks ago. I was almost 9 weeks but embryo was 5. I had normal period (although heavier than normal) almost exactly 4 weeks after. I'm now on day 10 of my cycle so fingers crossed for this month.

When my period came, I actually found it quite emotionally hard and I was really down. I found out that this is totally normal though! It just brought everything back in a weird way. I was so hoping to get started again straight away and as I had no problem getting pregnant the first time, I thought it would happen before I had another period.
Are you certain you're not pregnant again?

Thanks for sharing your experience @13Victoria. I hope it all works out for you this time around and you conceive again soon - if that's want you are wishing for! Sounds like you have a good cycle.

We have only 'done the deed' twice since, and used protection both times, so I would say it's very unlikely that I am pregnant again. Although I kind of want to be. We are planning to try again next year when we've organised/prepared a few things, but COVID-19 is putting spanners in the works!

I wonder how long before I should get worried that something is wrong? Although if I needed a D&C I'd like to think that they would have been able to tell me that at the scan 8 weeks ago?

Hi, I’m
Sorry for your loss, I also had a miscarriage recently. My next period came - I was expecting a Long heavy period, it was 3 days of what I could best describe as light spotting with a one day of slightly heavier spotting. Not what I expected at all.
Emotionally i was ok with my period. I struggle with the thoughts of what could have been and how many weeks would be.
All the best both of you.

@ShinyBadger thanks for sharing, I'm so sorry for your loss, it's so horrible to go through physically and mentally.

What were your timings like? How many weeks from your miscarriage did your first period arrive? And how far a long was your pregnancy if you don't mind me asking.

I'm worried because mine has been over 2 months now and still no sign :(

The doctor told me to wait 6 weeks but that it would probably come sooner. A friend of mine waited 7 for hers although she did have long cycles before. Have you called your doctor?

RaachelMorrow · 11/04/2020 22:19

Do you think I should? I feel a bit silly because of all of the Coronavirus pressures. Should I contact a midwife or a GP do you think? @13Victoria

I think you should definately call. I know how you feel but you are still important and so is your health. I'm sure they will understand. Maybe try your GP or your local hospital's Early Pregnancy Unit?

RaachelMorrow · 11/04/2020 22:49

@13Victoria thank you

I was 6 weeks, had my coil out in October and my cycles were abit hit and miss - hadn’t had a period for 17 years. But the two previous were 24 days and the one after the miscarriage was 31 days (but I’m not entirely sure I would call that a period as was only spotting). I have done a pregnancy test and it’s negative.

So if my next period comes when my app said it would be 8 weeks from my Mc.

I looked on the NHS website and it all depends on your cycle. This is what they said: “ It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks for your periods to return after a miscarriage, although it can take longer to settle into a regular cycle. The length of time it takes will depend on how regular your periods were before your pregnancy”

What were your cycles like before?

Where you seen in EPU? If so call them, I am sure they will offer you advise over The phone the ladies on our epu unit were lovely and helpful ( I know some are not!)

RaachelMorrow · 12/04/2020 12:07

Yes I also read that on the website but found it a bit vague, like how long before you should be concerned? Or who to contact if you are concerned! So thank you for sharing your experience, it's really helpful!

I came off the pill in November and had my withdrawal bleed in November, and then had a period before Christmas. I found out I was pregnant mid January! So truth be told, I'm not sure what my periods are like because I was on the pill for 8 years. I wasnt really tracking anything.

I might wait another week or so and then call the EPU where I had the internal scans. I've ordered a pregnancy test as well just for piece of mind.

I lost mine at 4 weeks 4 days and period came just 3 days late .. I know it's early but still hopefully I can re-start this cycle - if I miscarry a 3 Rd time then I'm defo going to be worried I have issues

ShinyBadger · 12/04/2020 14:08

Rachel do call EPU tell them they saw you. I am sure they will happily have a chat with you.

Dee sorry for you loss too.
